Hi TDIJetta99 -

I used to live in Montague! Too bad not anymore, huh? My ex husband knows a guys in Hackettstown, NJ who may be able to fix the seals on the injection pump. I'm hoping he will be able to get back to me today about it.

Do you know how long I'd need to leave the car with you? It's no problem to leave it...I've already assumed I'll need a rental while it's tied up, but just trying to get a handle on things.

Thanks so much for your post!

I think there are a couple guys in OKC, maybe one in Tulsa. You should be able to find them with a search, if they're not listed somewhere in this thread.

This is sad, real sad, that folks who buy a production vehicle need to frantically search for independent specialists since our dealer network is grossly incompetent!

On the bright side, we save tons of money!

Anyone know of a guru in/around the San Luis Obispo, CA, area? Looking at a NB in Atascadero but have no one to do a real good check-out on it.

Probably not within 100-200 miles of there. Your best bet is to find another TDI owner in the San Jose area who is willing to travel down there with you. Just another set of eyes and ears, and someone who knows what a good-running TDI is supposed to be like.

What happened to DeafBug? Didn't he used to be here?
He was, and he will be again, hopefully. But last I heard a back injury still prevents him from doing stuff like bending over an engine to change timing belt parts.

Yeap, he will be back, he is getting better. He was at GTG at Qtmech place and he was smiling at GTG not like before sad when last time I saw him at his house.:) He even helped SteveO with replacing glow plug harness so, I guess that tells that his back is getting better.

Is there a recommended mechanic in the Pittsburgh/Western Pennsylvania area? Thinking about getting a TDI when the 2009 models are available.
For a brand new, under warranty car, your dealer is likely the best bet.

Hard to find an independent with training on the new models.

Anyone else have a good place (or guru) for the Seattle/Mercer Island area that can do a TB and VagCom? Found a TDI that I want to make an offer on, but I have to know there's someplace I can take it to for a TB & check-out before driving through 2 fairly large states to home.
THANKS!!!!!

We'd go right through Portland; lovely city, spent our silver anniv there this past summer. The seller has no records for when the TB was done, but says it looks good. I'm not sure about playing those odds, even though Mercer Island to Portland isn't a huge distance. Car has 234K miles on it, 1996 Passat TDI. Any opinions?

The TB replacement for those is 60k miles, though on the plus side they are supposed to be much easier to replace.

I should let someone else describe the best way to inspect -- I am not an expert. Basically, however, with the engine off you want see a tight belt, unfrayed edges. With the engine on, you want smooth tracking, no squeaks or squeals. If it looks good, then you might feel reasonably confident that it can make it to Portland.

There are also people in the Seattle area, but I don't know them.

Anybody in the Washington DC/Baltimore metro area familiar with this guy?

My Jetta wagon in Baltimore needs some TLC and this fellows name has come up. Sure could use a recommendation if he is known by any of you all.

Thanks,

George

timing belt job quote

I just contacted one of the trusted New Jersey contacts and was quoted $1100 for:

Timing Belt
Water Pump
Tensioner
Pulley
Rollers
Serpentine Belt

Car is 98 Jetta TDi....sound ok or not good? Please advise otherwise, car needs TB within 500 Miles so its pretty urgent...and I need it done before the 31st.

-Thanks
