If memory serves, bottom of the graph is retarded and top is advanced.
I remember them being backwards to the pulley though. If you push the wrench away from you apex goes down on the graph, and vise versa.
I like mine just below the center line a hair. The pump will adjust well so long as it's within a couple mm's of the center line.
Fuel mileage will improve as well.

How big of a PITA to change timing? Is it just loosen three bolts while holding 22mm nut in place, 1/8" adjustment, retighten 3 bolts, and check with vag-com?

Checked my timing yesterday: at operating temp it was reading fuel temp of 140 and timing 26-28. Is this due to timing belt stretching as i'm due for a change in 6000 miles?

Got my timing to 42 so let’s see how it goes tomorrow AM.

Months later....I had time belt changed, timing now right about 60, still has a slight surge at startup. Whatever, it starts and runs....

When was the last time nozzles were changed? If ever,,,,,,,,,
At the very least I'd be getting them pop tested and balanced.

Startup initial fuel flow other common contribution is pickup side of the pump and air getting in the line.
Videos almost sounds like electric adjustment solenoid aka IQ fly adjustment
