Any recommendations for a reputable transmission shop in the Vancouver area (or surrounding region)?

Particularly a guru familiar with the 09A transmission??

I have a 2004 Jetta TDI wagon, auto tiptronic transmission, 214k km. Have spoken to a few transmission shops in the area, and so far have good help from Bert's Automotive on Kingsway (was recommended to me by a VW shop in the area, who apparently don't work on the tiptronic transmissions due to their issues).

Car is currently at Blackwell Distributors in Surrey, BC (taken there by the dealership where I recently purchased the car).

Any info/suggestions appreciated.

Cheers.

Thanks, I'll give him call. Looks like the shop next door is called Stan's Transmission. Will look them up as well to get some feedback.

Any other suggestions from anyone else??

One of my co-workers had a problem with the transmission in his Touareg. The dealer wanted $7800 to fix it. (I think they were going to replace the entire transmission because they don't actually know how to fix anything).

Another shop (Heinz Repair Shop in Richmond) referred him to a transmission specialist and they diagnosed and fixed problem for $1900. It was a very common problem with that transmission too, so no excuse for VW to not know how to fix it... All the seals in the valve body had to be replaced with a different material.

Judging from where he described the place to be, I think it must be Marine Drive Transmission at Unit 40, 970 South-West Marine Drive. I figured this out with Google.

Unfortunately I can't ask my co-worker if that's the place because he lives in Germany now. Hard to contact. He might respond in a few days, if he even remembers.

Maybe you could try taking your car to Heinz Repair Shop, and if they can't fix it, they may refer you to the same transmission specialist as they did for my co-worker.

Stan's Transmission is good, they only work on automatics. They took good care of my sister a number of years back.

What's it doing that requires service? My own had issues with the solenoids. Any transmission shop should be able to replace them. It's $300 for the full kit plus whatever labor they put into it.

Thanks for all the recommendations! As far as the issues go... gears slipping, not engaging, thunking into engagement. Scanned the codes and a few things came up. Will need a rebuild. Has 214k on it so will be good to have a rebuilt tranny in there!

Not always good to have a 'rebuilt' tranny in there, sorry!
I've had 4 trannies rebuilt (not VW)and only one lasted 200k km. Disappointing rebuilds from both Bert's and Benz in Maple Ridge, got less than 40k km from each.
I spent 2 hrs arguing with the manager of a Bert's while he rebuilt someones's transmission and he was reading the assembly instruction sheet that came with the very very small rebuild kit, just like you and I would have! I watched him drop a check-ball and chase it around on the floor and plop it into place with just a quick dust-blow from the lips!
My next car will be a manual tranny version.
