A3's expected lifespan is 299,999, but a B4's is 999,999?
I knew there was a reason for the higher Passat price!

Had a friend that had a 99.5 Jetta TDI that got stuck at 70k miles . It kept reseting to 70k @ 79,999 . It did it 3 times then the odo added a 1 to the total . Now he is stuck on 170,000 :D .

lordjohn,

Great god! 300,000 miles of kilometres? Either one is a great accomplishement! I'm interested since I am the original owner of a '98 A3 Jetta TDI. I just reached 120,000 miles.

What has been your secret to such a long life of diesel longevity?

Yes that is 334100 miles currently on it. Orig clutch tranny and engine. Needed a new injector pump at 322000 and an inner cv boot at 331 so it sure has treated me well. Averages around 720 miles a tank. Even has origional glow plugs. getting a little hard to start when extremely cold but still hoping for 375k miles.

No reason why your TDI shouldn't last all the way up to 400k and even 500k if you take regular care of it. You might have less trouble starting your car if you actually did replace the glowplugs, if even one is still working it won't fault the computer.

Congrats! I'm up to 208k - at my current rate, I'll hit 300k in less than 3 years.

Pick up one of these to check your glow plugs:

Clip the lead onto the battery positive terminal and touch the probe to the glow plug terminal. A good one will glow bright, a marginal one will glow dimly and a bad one won't glow at all.

Also, retarded base injector pump timing will make for hard starting in cold weather.

Thanks for the info about the glow plugs and i have already removed and tested with ohm meter and amp draw and all tested good. when i put the new injector pump on i checked the compression and that is down a bit, about 415 average. Also the hard starts are also due to freezing temps. but this car does show that never missing an oil change or service goes a long way. I ONLY use delo 15 40 oil and mann filters. Use same oil in my big cummins N14 and it has 1023000 with no repairs other than turbo and ECU.
