Resetting tire pressure warning ( SOLVED Sept.20)

SOLVED Sept.20th:D

Had my car at the dealer getting the Phase 2 done recently. On the work-order it also states all tires set to 35Lbs.
Ever since that time I cannot get rid of the warning icon.
Tried pushing the reset button in the glove box, in the Multi function display, all to no avail.

This is not really a true tire pressure reading since it only works from the ABS brake sensors which can detect a change in tire circumference due to low air in the tires.
Eliminate a setting using a VCDS?

Anyone have a solution?

Read your manual? To reset the system to a new pressure, iirc, you press *and hold* the button until you hear a chime . . . . specifics *are* in the manual . . .

There are just too many to list....
Sometimes the NMS freaks out and the ABS module will not shut of the TPMS light until the car gets driven some. I have no idea why.

I would check the ABS controller for any DTCs, and I *think* there is a Basic Setting in there somewhere that forces the TPMS into relearn mode. Which should be the same thing pressing and holding the button does, but it does not always work.

I had checked the manual, but maybe missed the hold until it chimes. Will give that a shot.
Thx

I'll also check the ABS module for DTC's

Likely the press and hold will do it . . . The increased/changed pressure definitely will cause the system to alarm, as will tire wear over time, and I have never had a recal fail to correct those changes on either of ours.

Held the da*n button in the glove compartment until my finger turned blue with just power on and with engine running, didn't work.

Raining now so I'll try on a better day to see with the VCDS.

And you are certain that you got the "SET" button, right (I think I recall two, and my wife getting the wrong one once . . .). And no sound or change in the light? If so, it probably is time to check for codes . . . . (FWIW, I do this ignition on, not runing on mine . . . the button, not necessarily codes).

The dealer probably didn't see the light, since it takes a bit of time for the system to sense the change, but go back and gripe is anothernoption, since they fixed that which was not broken for you, apparently until it was . . .

Been there done this - it won't work. The power needs to be on but the ENGINE OFF.

I had to be slowly moving while holding the button, but I also had my right index finger on my nose and saying "beep beep beep", not sure if it was needed, but it finally worked.

There is a trunk release "lock" button in the glove box, its a kinda valet feature. Make sure your not pushing that.

VCDS will be able to shed more light into it if all else fails.

Drove slowly for about 500' all the while holding the "correct" button. Got out of the car and hopped around the car once clockwise on one leg whistling Dixie. Then repeated above!

So far nothing has worked.

Now waiting for my netbook to fully charge so I can scan the car.

well shoot, I got nothing, maybe whistling Dixie backwards?

Wiring for that button should go to the ABS module/controller, at least that's how button was wired on the mk5 platform, maybe a peak see of the loom by the ABS controller (located by the firewall) see if the DPF regens have done any damage to the loom.

Posting some scans done, one a year ago and two this year in August.
I cannot see any way to change things.
In one controller I get to chose between 2 axles, front and rear, light or heavy load and the default setting for the tire pressure is 5.5 bar. Maybe this needs setting to a much much lower number, I just see that 5.5 is 79.7708 PSI. Maybe set this to 2.0 bar which is 29PSI

Am I guessing right???

Go into the ABS module and see if they changed the coding to direct (IE the system is looking for sensors). I think there is long coding help that you can check.

Also in the module once in "indirect mode" you should be able to force it to start it's calibration.

dig around the mk5 folders, a few people converted their direct to indirect and provided the coding you needed to look for.

Try taking all your tire pressures up to 45psi, hold reset then go to your desired pressures and hit reset again. I think all pressures must be equal on the final setting.

The indirect system in the Passat cannot read pressures, so that is not relevant. It looks for changes in wheel speed due to deflation, and trips on that. Thus, you can calibrate it any any pressure you choose. Were this a direct system with wheel sensors, *then* you might have a point, but still dubious . . .

I'll give that a try tomorrow, have tried everything else.

agreed, it places trust in the owner to verify the pressure is set correctly and then does some math on each tire rotation and flags if that rotation math goes askew, either one tire or all of the tires.

You could set the TPMS with completely flat tires and it'd chime indicating the system was set.

Well I've tried all suggestions and none have removed the "Low pressure"icon from the instrument panel.

I'm just about ready to remove the clear plastic and black paint over the icon !

I've been sitting and thinking, I wonder if I need to get into the ABS system settings. Maybe it is in there that this problem comes from.

I've set and reset in the 65 and 04 modules to no avail. I do make notes of my changes!

Of course, having a dealer (or other shop) troubleshoot and fix the issue is always an option . . . . and a far better idea than jerry rigging things . . . . As others have noted, you see codes for wheel sensors that don't exist in this car, and, iirc, the problem began after a fix . . . Sounds like a coding error, and so eone elses problem to me at this point . . . . Was coding on the ABS controller ever verified?

Well a dealer may be an option, but after the Pase 2 and having re-installed my Stage 2 kind of makes me want to avoid the dealer.

And again, did you ever verify coding? With all the flashing, it's not impossible that something went sideways, and that was, (again iirc) about when this started, right?

also you can just turn off TPMS all together, nobody needs those nannies anyways.

Not sure how much difference there would be, but my wife's 2015 US SEL has this for the coding in the ABS controller:

I'd turned off all tire sensors, where ever I found them including the one that sets up in the MFD, made no difference at all.

I've put in 40lbs of air pushed the button and then reduced it to 35lb exactly for each tire. Pushed the tire button in the glove compartment again, even heard a ding.
Makes no difference, the tire icon stays on. When I start the car it flashes and shortly after it stays on solid.

And again, I point out that this system *CANNOT* sense the actual pressure! It just plain does not work that way! All it sees is changes in RPM of a given wheel versus the others at a given speed, which corresponds to the change in diameter with pressure change. Period!

I think if you understood the system better, you might well have better luck with this . . . Not sure exactly what the "control module", but there is no such device by name or the "J502" in my car, again pointing to a potential coding error, perhaps in another place than the ABS controller. Not sure what your scan is from, but it does not look like VCDS, so hard to compare.

*Or* the Canadian system is different, and somehow got US coding . . . You really need to compare *everything* to an identical car to verify, or find someone who can.

This is the key statement, there is something wrong in the system, whether it is a failed wheel speed sensor or something else, the light will not clear until you fix it. If it were just a simple push the button and reset the pressure, it would not flash on initial start, it would come on, go out for a second, then come right back on.
