It's not a 500 mile half like IBW...

But 425 on my Golf isn't bad, especially since you can't vent it.

Ordered a new rear wiper arm, blade and cap from ECS today for the GSW. The 2/3x a year I actually
use it I do appreciated but the rest of the time it's just something else to clean around.

Absolutely not. I don't even know how. That was yesterday: some time at 65 MPH, some at 75, some at 80. Some stop and go traffic. Some back roads, hilly, in Western MA. A/C on all day.

I drive the same no matter what car I'm in, as fast as traffic will allow, shift at 3000 RPM mostly, use the cruise when I feel like it. This car does well, and you can see it's not fully broken in. My ALH would have delivered similar FE in the same conditions.

I swear on my ALH I am getting more miles on the front 1/2 of the tank than I used to. It's usually 540-550 at the halfway point now, but still only at 750 when the light comes on.

I thought I remember getting 400 on the 1/2 half and 350 on the back half a few years ago. weird.

mine is the same, i also fine when my fuel gauge is exactly straight up ie, 420, my mileage is usually 42 mpg. it is a really close approximation

FINALLY...got the steering wheel controls on the Mk4 Jetta wagon working with the Pioneer head unit (AVIC F700 for now; NEX5000 going in shortly).
I was *positive* I had the correct wires, but they weren't getting recognized by the aftermarket parts.
First hassle was getting retained accessory power working via the Metra XSVI-9003. The trick there: Do the initialization procedure (courtesy of NFrazier over at the vortex):
1. have the xsvi plugged into the car, DO NOT plug it into the radio yet.
2. Close all doors.
3. turn the ignition on to the "on" position for 45-60 seconds (do not start the car).
4. once the time elapses turn the key to the off position, remove key from ignition, open door.
5. close door; plug radio into harness (while still keeping the harness plugged into the car).
6. turn the car to "on" position (or start it)

Next hassle - actually getting the steering wheel controls of the MFSW (Mk4) working via Metra's ASWC-1 (which has a connector as part of the aforementioned XSVI-9003, but still needs the "brain" of the ASWC-1; the XSVI-9003 connector just saves the hassle of having to do anything with wiring - it all becomes plug-and-play).
The trick there: Actually start the car; don't try to do it with just the radio on, key in ACC or "on" position - you'll be sitting there for hours (ask me how I know...).
Do a reset (hold the reset button for 15 seconds, turn off the car, let it sit for a bit, then fire up the car, repeatedly press the VOL+ button on the steering wheel and voila! - steering wheel volume and track controls! :D

Today: First oil change since purchasing the vehicle. Come to think of it, first oil change i did by myself without the assistance from my dad. And did it in the work parking lot during my lunch hour.

Having tired of the BEEEEEEEEEP and EMISSIONS WORKSHOP message I get 20sec. after I start the car (diagnosed by VCDS as "17057 - Glow Plug Electrical Fault, Cylinder 3 - Intermittent") , I replaced the glow plug wire harness in the 2002 (four-wire model).
I was surprised that it lasted this long, as it was so cracked and brittle, that there were literally pieces of plastic breaking free every time I touched it.

Imagine my chagrin, then, when I got the same error after replacing it. And it came back as soon as I cleared it. So, must be the glow plug, right?
Replaced that with a brand new one.
Nope - same thing. Comes back as soon as I've cleared it - don't even leave the SHOW FAULT CODES screen.
Starting to run out of ideas here. Anyone?

When you replaced the harness, how far up did you replace the harness?

Did you just cut and splice somewhere in the engine bay or did you take it all the way?

Replaced the whole thing - snipped the old one at both ends, unplugged it up by the firewall underneath that plastic "ski-jump" kinda thing, and inserted the new one.

Really weird: If I detach the harness from every glow plug (i.e., none are connected), I get the same error (?).

I seem to remember that VCDS (or Bosch) does not report the Glow Plug locations correctly meaning that if it's giving you a fault for Glow Plug #3, it isn't on Cylinder #3.

You might check all the rest of the glow plugs and/or swap them around and see if the error goes away or changes to a different cylinder.

IIRC they are reported in opposite direction than normal. What we see as cylinder number 3 (based on the needle lift sensor) would be GP #2 (it's the second GP on the harness).

Greased the innards of the wiper linkage on 2 of my beasts and got stopped by the third. Someone in the past threw out one of the orings and that side hardly turns and the shaft won't come out.

On these I decided to oil the shaft carefully and just put grease on the ends to hopefully keep water out.

Right - I should've thought of that. I'll give it a try once I'm back home.
Thanks for the ideas, guys!

Oil change (25k on the oil), sent sample to blackstone, fixed oil leak on top of damn diesel geek bypass (I miss the setup I built on the last car), bumped my IQ down a tad now that the cool temps hold the smoke down, installed backup camera in preparation for the Pioneer NEX 4000 (cheapest Carplay unit), and installed my new German plate.

Love the British version of the show.

As for what did I do to my car...

- Put the winter tires/wheels on this last weekend.
- touched up the caliper paint
- repaired some rust damage behind the front mud flaps
- ordered a bunch of front end parts, which should be here later today (steering knuckles w/ hubs, bearings, and ABS speed rings. Improved metal swaybar links with ploy bushings, controls arms with poly bushings, dogbone w/poly, and tie rods.

My front bearings are going and these other parts look pretty bad, so figure it's about time to replace them. Everything else down there still looks okay, and the rest of the vehicle still looks like new.

Took the wagon in today to check for rust warrantee check. They took photos and measurements. They told me it would be 2 months to get an answer back. Both rockers at the front, rear quarter panel where it meets the bumper and the roof where the roof rails join the roof in two places. So now I wait!!

2002 TDI (ALH) with 513,000 km. First Owner and very happy... No Problems, never left us stranded on the Highway. Average useage is about between under 4 ltr. and 5 ltr. Normal longdistance travel: 4.1/100
My car got yesterday another Oilchange (after 18,000 km) and look under the Body.... Looks great. No Dirt from Alberta Gravelroads left. It's ok for another Winter here in the Southern Part of BC.... hardly no snow.

Had a keytastic week at my condo downtown. My ALH came with one key from the start and the key was pretty ratty so I ordered a new casing so before dinner on sunday I was working on the swap. . after dinner my girlfriend decided to clean up my crap and throw out the "old plastic case" . . . RFID included down to the incernator. The cars parked five stories underground  8Ordered the VAG Tacho to get the SKU so I can code another key with VCDS. . and it worked out so I coded another one as a spare so I dont have this crap happen again. .

I had the same issue.. Replace GP and harness.. Also had other codes and limp mode... Chased it for years... Ended up being a bad ECU!! I wasted money when an $75 used ECU fixed it all.

Those keys aren't cheap.

I lost one years ago, and VW wanted something like $280 or $300 for a new one.
Wasn't too bad. I was freaking out when I was reading into it they said ship ecu to tuner or tow car to dealer. I was thinking of the tuner route but thought might aswell buy the gear so I can make more. I both bought from venders in the states and didn't pay customs due to the small cost: vag tacho $65~ and the key $32/each allready had VCDS=$129 all in.

Oil and filter change in both cars, T6 5w40 :) someone seriously overtorqued the oil filter cap in the Golf, an old serpentine belt wrapped around it finally did the trick!
