'04 Passat BHW timing belt questions

Hi all,

A couple questions about doing this timing belt...

Is a VAG-Com required? Or is it just good to have? I have looked for a post that gives a definite answer and was unable to find one.

Is there a How-To for this job? Again, looked around and couldn't find one but I thought I had seen one before

BTW, I do have the special tools but have not gotten a VAG-com yet. Also, I have experience doing many other timing belts, just not this VW engine.

you don'tr need VAGCOM for the PD engines. Just the "special" tools...

Thanks for the responses....You know, I read that post about the noise this AM and now feel I should defer the TB job until I can learn more about that problem. I wish I had the time to read all the info on this forum!!! I will take time tonight to search here for more info. What parts end up getting replaced? Chain, guides, hex shaft....?
