auto trans conversion to manual

HI everyone, new to the forum I was gifted a 02 jetta TDI wagon with auto trans 175000 miles I wanted to convert to the 5 speed man.Does any one know what manual tranny from different models or years would fit without a lot of modifications?

There may be others but, look for a transmission from another Tdi year 2000-2003 manual transmission with a trans code etched or stamped on the housing of EGR. Others have different gear ratios.

Make sure you get a transmission from a diesel, not a gasoline powered car. The diesel's gear ratios are significantly taller. A gasser transmission is not a good match to the diesel.

I found on my Beetle that my MPG made an immediate 8 MPG gain after the manual was put in. If you're thinking about some engine mods, go ahead and get a heavier duty clutch than the standard DMF while you're there.
