Engine braking

This is an observation/question about fuel consumption when braking with engine (downhill, manual transmission).

Naimly, the big question is: does the car use less diesel, if one brakes with engine and therefore allows the engine to turn fast, or, to brake using brakes and have the engine idle.

Today, I checked the trip computer. It says 3.2l/100km when idling and 0.0l/100km when braking with engine.

If this is true (And I do a kind of believe it), I wonder, how is it possible not to put a drop of diesel into the engine and turn it this fast. Aren't there any drawbacks or anything? Or is the trip computer lying?
