Default A4 TDI engine measuring blocks/groups

Based on the Bentley CD but includes other groups not documented there. Actual labels/values displayed may vary.

Group 000 measuring blocks

From left to right

Engine idle speed: range 42 - 45 = 870-950
Start of injection: range 12 - 75 = 2 degrees ATDC - 3 degress BTDC
Throttle position: 0 = 0 %
Injection quantity: 11 - 45 = 2.2 - 9.0 mg/stroke
Manifold Absolute Pressure
Atmospheric pressure
Engine coolant temperature: 80 - 35 = 80 - 110 degrees C
Intake Manifold Temperature: 182 - 50 = 10 - 110 degrees C
Fuel Temperature: 91 - 201 = 20 - 80 degrees C
Air mass: 69 - 111 = 230 - 370 mg/H

These are valid ranges only when the EGR is switched on, engine at idle and at least 80C (176F) coolant temp.

Group 001 (injected quantity)

Engine RPM: 870 - 950
Injected quantity: 2.2 - 9.0 mg/H
Modulating piston displacement sensor voltage: 1.450 - 2.000 V
Engine coolant temperature sensor: 80 - 110 C

If below 2.2 - injection is running too rich
If above 9.0 - injection is running too lean, or the engine is cold

If below 1.450 volts - injection too rich
If above 2.000 volts - injection is too lean, or engine is cold

Group 002 (idle speed)

Engine rpm: 870 - 950
Throttle position: 0 = 0
Operating condition: 010
Engine coolant temperature: 80 - 110 C

Throttle should go 0 - 100 depending on pressure applied to "go" pedal
Operating condition left digit: 1 = idle increased because AC is on
Operating condition middle digit: Closed throttle position switch is closed (foot not on pedal)
Operating condition right digit: AC compressor switched on

Group 003 (EGR)

Engine rpm: 870 - 950
Air mass drawn in (specified): 230 - 370 mg/H
Air mass drawn in (actual): 230 - 370 mg/H
EGR vacuum solenoid duty cycle: 40 - 75 %

If air mass specified is above 370, engine too cold.
If air mass actual is below 230 mg/H, excessive EGR or an air leak.
If air mass actual is above 370 mg/H, engine is cold, insufficient EGR, or bad MAF sensor
(Note: EGR is turned off after approximately 2 minutes of idle. Reading should be within that time period.)
If a DTC is present, air mass actual will have a constant value of approx. 550mg/H over the complete RPM and load range.

Group 004 (Start of injection)

Engine rpm: 870 - 950
Start of injection (specified): 2 ATDC - 3 BTDC
Start of injection (actual): 2 ATDC - 3 BTDC
Cold start injector duty cycle: 3 - 80%

If start of injection (specified) is earlier than 3 BTDC, engine too cold.
If start of injection (actual) is before 3 BTDC, engine too cold, injection pump set too advanced, or cold start injector inoperative.
If start of injction (actual) is later than 2 ATDC, injection pump is set too retarded, injection adjustment blocked, or cold start injector inoperative.

Group 005 (starting conditions)

Engine speed
Starting quantity
Start of injection (actual)
Engine coolant temperature

This is not useful for troubleshooting.

Group 006 (test with ignition switch on)

Speed
Brake pedal monitor
Cruise control system
Cruise control system (indicates if activated, 0 = activated but switched off, 1 = activated, swtiched on, 255 = not activated)

Cruise control system left digit: Clutch switch closed (clutch not depressed) = 0, 1 = clutch depressed
Cruise control system middle digit: CC/DFI brake pedal switch open (brake pedal depressed) = 1, 0 = pedal not depressed
Cruise control system right digit: brake light switch depressed pedal = 1, not depressed = 0

Right cruise control system 6 digit display has a 1, left to right, when:
Clutch operated
Brake pedal operated
Resume speed operated on the switch
Acceleration operated on the switch
Cruise control and memory switched off
Cruise controll system switched on

Group 007 (Temperatures)

Fuel Temperature
Nothing
Air intake temperature
Engine coolant temperature

If the car has been sitting overnight (for example) these should all equate to approximately ambient air temperature. If not a sensor may be bad.

If fuel temp indicates -5.4C, there is a short circuit or the sensor is bad/inoperative.
If air temp indicates approx. 136.8C (275F) the air temp sensor is bad/inoperative. Check for a DTC.
If coolant temp sensor indicates a large deviation from ambient temp, there may be a short circuit or the ECT sensor is bad/inoperative.

Group 008

Injection limitation when warm/full throttle/3rd gear @ 3000 RPM

Engine rpm (2900-3100)
Injection quantity requested mg/R (40.0-42.0)
Injection quantity rpm limit mg/R (35.5-36.5)
Injection quantity MAF limit mg/R (36.0-39.0)

Group 009 (injection quantity limitation)

Engine rpm
Injection quantity (cruise control system active)
Injection quantity limit signal from automatic transmission controler during gear change
Nothing

Group 010
Air system warm/full throttle/3rd gear @ 3000 RPM

MAF sensor: 800-1000
Barometric pressure
MAP (boost): 1700-2080
Throttle position %: 100

Group 011
Charge pressure control warm/full throttle/3rd gear @ 3000 RPM

Engine rpm
Specified MAP: 1850-1950
Actual MAP: 1700-2080
MAP Valve DC: 45-95

Group 012

Glow Status
Glow period
Suply voltage from ECM
Engine coolant temperature

Not useful for troubleshooting.

Group 013

This group shows the smooth running control injected quantity cylinder 1 - 4, left to right. Values expected -2.0 - + 2.0 mg/R

This is showing how the ECM is balancing the power for each cylinder at idle to account for variations in component tolerances, jet sizes, compressions, etc.).

Group 015 (fuel consumption)

Engine rpm
Injected quantity (actual)
Fuel consumption
Injection requirement (as indicated by the go pedal)

Group 016 (additional heater)

Generator loading
Additional heater
Activation of heater elements
Voltage supply from ECM

Additional heater display is 8 digit number where, left to right, 1 =
nothing
nothing
ECT sensor inoperative
engine started within the last 10 seconds
engine speed below 870 rpm
battery voltage below 9 volts
generator inoperative
ECT exceeds 70 C-80C (158F - 176F), or intake air temp exceeds 5C (41F)

Activation of heater elements is a 2 digit number. Left digit = 1 when high heat output relay is on. Right digit = 1 when low heat output relay is on.

Group 017 readiness code

Not relevant
binary code: x000xxxx

These may represent ready (0) for "Comprehensive component", "Misfire", and "Fuel system" in the first code and "EGR system" in the second. I have not verified.

I logged groups 008 and 011 on a 2001 Golf TDI and got some interesting fuel and boost readings.

Hi thanks for the info. I am haveing problems with trying the adaption in my car. I log in as 12233 and then want to mod the injection timing. I can mod blocks 1,2,3 and 5 but 4 the one I need says its not available. What am I doing wrong? I realise that this could damage my engine etc.. Thanks, Des.

what about "normal " setting s and "basic setting like in vw tool ? we just did a A4 t belt and using vw in basic setting group or block 00 for 2 and 9 the #2 block reads 0 seems very strange when i switch to "normal setting" it shows a value etc just not in basic it s getting frustrating ha we've adjusted the pump sprocket few times with no change in goup / block 2 from 0..any ideas? its pretty drastic you can have the engine run nice and smooth in normal then switch to basic setting and it smokes white smoke liek cray and idels much rough and stumbles a little so something is fishy...

When I get my VAG-COM software next week, I want to perform a tune-up on my '01 Jetta. What are the optimum settings that I should use for this car such as idle speed, timing, etc? I assume these can all be set using the OBDII tool. Are these settings posted elsewhere on this board?

Do you know anything else about measuring block 006. The second digit reads like it should and the third digit always reads 1 no matter if the brake is depressed or not. I have been having trouble forever.

I am having exactly the same thing show up as above, did anyone come up with any explanation for this please. My engine is working fine apart from hesitant cold starts in the mornings!

Hi,

is there any difference between the values

* "Air intake temperature" Group 7, Value 3
* "Intake Air Temperature" Group 21, Value 2

.. ?

Or better, is there any Measurement block showing the temperature of the charged (turbo) and subsequently cooled (IC) air in the intake manifold ?


I would like to measure how efficient my TDI's intercooler still is.

They are the same reading.
There is no sensor between the turbo and the intercooler. Therefore the differential is not known.
