Forget all my stuff.. there is a potential issue because it doesn't do a good job of handling the $5100 min. Just go with...

I'm a long time lurker, now turned new member.
I like to crunch numbers, so I finally had something worth adding to the discussion.

I wrote a proposed buyback calculator too...
http://phpbbcalendarmod.com/buyback/index.php/calculator/

I also took time to analyze some of the extreme outlier cases:
http://phpbbcalendarmod.com/buyback/index.php/calculator/extreme-outliers/

Enjoy!

The posts are just a mess this morning.. hard to follow with so many different threads.

Just thought it would be nice if we has a specific thread just for those of us that are Legal\Math challenged.

Seems like this would be more helpful if we kept this thread for the straight up Buyback math. Excluding people that want to keep their cars, or people with leases, or people that are underwater on their loans where they fall into that 130% math.

or maybe nobody cares and I'll be the only one that posts. Anyway so here it goes.

Step # 1

Using the PDF file https://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/att._1a_-_buyback_modification_table.pdf to find your Model.. refer to the Buyback column #1

At the end of that Year block, you will see a section for "Options" .. adjust Col #1 accordingly

THIS IS YOUR BASE NUMBER

In my example, I have a 2009 Jetta Sedan in California with 0 options so my base is $12,527

Step # 2

Find the Mileage Adjustment PDF file for your situation from https://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/cases-proceedings/162-3006/volkswagen-group-america-inc .... Should be one of the "Attachment 2x" files

Here is where it gets tricky, Many people are adjusting for JUNE.. but the buybacks will not occur until Sept or Oct. Playing it a little safer, using OCT as the adjustment factor, we get a number of 13,546. (Thanks for the catch)

So take your PROJECTED mileage for October and subtract 13,546 from it. Now, use that result, to look in the left "Adjust Mileage" column to find where it crosses. Read to the right to find your Year and get the "Buyback" adjustment.

THIS IS YOUR MILEAGE ADJUSTMENT

In my example, I have an Oct Projected mileage of 101,120. So 101,120 - 13546 = 87,574. This maps out to an adjustment figure of $0

Step #3

Add or Subtract your Mileage Adjustment (Step 2) from your base value (step 1).. this is your Estimate for a straight forward buyback.

In my example $12,527 - $0 = $12,527 total Buyout estimate.

Note**: If that final number happens to falls below $5,100.... then you will get $5,100.

**I think this last part is incorrect. After re-reading the section in the summary, the 5,100 applies to the "compensation" value and not the overall buyback. However, since we do not have our Sept 2015 numbers to do the "20% of the Vehicle Value plus $2,986.73" all we can do is ASSume for now Col 1 already took that into consideration. All this means is that for anyone that has done the math and ended up below 5,100... your end result may be what you actually got and no bump for you. Sorry

The definitive "How to calculate your buyback"

Here's how to calculate your VW buy back and fix options (I'll use mine as an example):

BUY BACK

NOTE: The number you end up with through this process is your final restitution number. There is no other compensation on top of this number. It is considered to be your car's FMV as of Sept, 2015 plus a compensation amount included, which is why it is so much higher than your car's actual FMV in Sept, 2014.

If you have owned your vehicle since Sept. 18, 2015:
Reference tables in Attachment 1A: Buyback and Approved Emissions Modifications Restitution
https://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/att._1a_-_buyback_modification_table.pdf
Find your vehicle in the table according to Model, Year, and your location (https://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/att._1b_-_nada_region_list.pdf)
Now start with the number under “Buy Back” (Column 1)

Sample:

Buy Back amount from table (Attachment 1-A)

2013 Jetta (Midwest) $21,647

Make adjustments to this number according to the options you have by using the numbers in Column 1 under "Options" from Attachment 1-A

No power tran; - 870
Power Seat; + 330
Fender Stereo; + 440
Power Sunroof; + 660
$22,207

Now you will need to adjust this number for the mileage on your vehicle using the table in Attachment 2A-2C
Start with your current mileage.

My Current Mileage = 108k

Now adjust for your mileage back to September, 2015 by multiplying the number of months since Sept., 2015 to the date of buyout. I will use today as an example, so 10 months.

1,042 x 10 = 10,420

Subtract that from your current mileage.

108,000-10,420 = 97,580 adjusted miles

Look up the amount in the table in Attachment 2A-2C under the column "buyback" corresponding to your model, year, and the adjusted mileage figure from above. The number may be a positive number (if you have very low miles), zero, or a negative number (for higher mileage vehicles).

97,580 miles adj =
- $3,990

Adjust your buy back number by adding the mileage adjustment to your previous buy back number.
Final Buyback offer from VW = 22,207+(-3,990)=

$18,217

IF YOUR MILEAGE ADJUSTMENT IS A NEGATIVE NUMBER (HIGH MILEAGE), YOUR BUY BACK IS REDUCED BY THAT MUCH. A POSITIVE NUMBER (LOW MILEAGE) INCREASES YOUR BUY BACK.

I don't think it is possible, but if your buy back were to be less than $5,100, you would receive a minimum payment of $5,100.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FIX OPTION (MODIFICATION)

If you have owned your vehicle since Sept. 18, 2015:
Reference tables in Attachment 1A: Buyback and Approved Emissions Modifications Restitution
https://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/att._1a_-_buyback_modification_table.pdf
Find your vehicle in the table according to Model, Year, and your location (https://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/att._1b_-_nada_region_list.pdf)
Now start with the number under “Modification” (Column 2)

Sample:
Amount from table (Attachment 1-A)
2013 Jetta (Midwest) $6,097

Make adjustments to this number according to the options you have by using the numbers in Column 2 under "Options" from Attachment 1-A

No power trans - 145
Power Seat + 70
Fender Stereo + 110
Power Sunroof + 120
$6,252

Now you will need to adjust this number for the mileage on your vehicle using the table in Attachment 2A-2C
Start with your current mileage.

My Current Mileage = 108k

Now adjust for your mileage back to September, 2015 by multiplying the number of months since Sept., 2015 to the date of buyout. I will use today as an example, so 10 months.

1,042 x 10 = 10,420

Subtract that from your current mileage.

108,000-10,420 = 97,580 adjusted miles

Look up the amount in the table in Attachment 2A-2C under the column "Mod Adjustment" corresponding to your model, year, and the adjusted mileage figure from above. The number may be a positive number (if you have very low miles), zero, or a negative number (for higher mileage vehicles).

97,580 miles adj =
- $665

Adjust your Modification Restitution number by adding the mileage adjustment to your previous number.

Final Modification Restitution offer from VW = 6,252+(-665)=
$5,587

IF YOUR MILEAGE ADJUSTMENT IS A NEGATIVE NUMBER (HIGH MILEAGE), YOUR AMOUNT IS REDUCED BY THAT MUCH. A POSITIVE NUMBER (LOW MILEAGE) INCREASES YOUR PAYMENT.

IF YOUR NUMBER IS LESS THAN $5,100, YOU WOULD GET THE MINIMUM OF $5,100.

I took an image of the mileage when I filled up back in September, because I forget while filling out the fuelly stats.... Anyway, looks like I'll get enough to pay off the vehicle and have some left over to fill the tank a few more times.

Okay I am not very good at math. I teach history and I have always had trouble with math. I want to make sure I am calculating everything correctly. My 2013 Jetta sedan is worth $21,677 I have 68,000 miles on it right now and if I calculate it for June I subtract 9,378 giving me 58,622. If I do the same but for October I get 54,454. After adjusting it for mileage I am coming up with $20,137 based on the June figures and $20,557 based on the October figures. So will I get $20,000 or so for my car if I chose for VW to buy it back?

Or is the $20,000 figure the amount of the buy back and the compensation? So would I get around $15,000 for the buy back and $5,000 or so in compensation?

How I read the $5,100 "minimum"

OK, here's my take on how to figure out what you'll get, with the $5,100 minimum accounted for. This is explained on the forms, but not in the clearest way possible unless you are used to reading government forms :p

1. Start by ASSUMING YOU ARE DOING THE MODIFICATION. Figure out how much they will pay you using the "mod" column of both the base and adjustment tables.

2. Look at that number.
Is it greater than $5,100?
- Yes: Do you want Modify or buy-back?
- Modify: That is how much you will get paid.
- Buy back: No adjustment needed
- No: Do you want Modify or buy-back?
- Modify: You will get $5,100
- Buy back: Subtract your number from $5,100, and remember this. It is the adjustment you will need to apply.
For example, if you figured a $4,000 payment to modify, the adjustment will be $1,100

3. Now, go figure out the buy back using the buy back columns to figure out the payment.

4. Add any adjustment (from 2 above, $1,100 in my example) to that buy back payment value.

The buy back column already has the extra compensation built in (the same as the mod value), but needs to be adjusted to make sure that you get at least $5,100 in compensation.

Gone but not forgotten
I will say I am not happy with mine. There is a $3,500 drop from 2011's to 2010, but only $1,000 from 2010 to 2009. Right now my buyout is in the 12's. I am not sure I would sell it for that number yet it is still undetermined if the Gen1 cars can even be fixed so what are my options then?

If you remember the 2011 MSRP dropped something like $2500 from the '10 model. Making that discrepancy look even more mystifying.

Power Sunroof, CA + 570
Navigation System + 600

Purchased car new in 2012 for roughly 32,000 + TTL. Interestingly when I purchased the car, these options were available only as part of the tech pkg. Here, they are broken out individually, and don't account for xenon headlights.

All in all, not so thrilled with this buyback amount. If I were to purchase a new, equally priced car, after taxes, I'd owe close to $10k after TTL. Doesn't exactly feel like I'm being made "whole." So my choices are to wait for a fix we know won't come, drive a polluting car and pocket a little dough, or go into debt to pick up a new ride. Not great.

If we're required to pay vw loans up until they hand us a check, i will owe $6,667 (roughly) in october. therefore i will be paying off my car and getting $11,830 to spend on a new Canyon diesel.

our adjusted value comes to $22,307 dollars for a buyback. If we opt to fix the car our payout comes to $6,207.

To add a wild card we owe approximately 16k on the car, (which we bought one week before the scandal broke).

This means if we let VW buy the car back, we lose the car, pay off the loan, and end up with about $6,307 cash. However if we opt to fix, we can use the $6,207 to pay down the loan to approx $9,793 owed.

The choices are lose a car, get 6k cash, and have to replace the car. OR keep the car and drop the loan down to 9k owed on it, and proceed forward from there. I like the car a lot, but 6k will buy a lot of perfectly good used cars for cash. Its the wifes car so it will be interested to see which way she goes.

I don't think you add 4837 to the base buyback amount. The base buyback amount includes Nada value with the minimum of 5100 dollars settlement.

that red number up there is NOT added to your buy back amount, it is the amount you would be given instead of a buyback if you opt for a fix. your corrected buyback will actually be $12,507 plus your $1k in goodwill stuff.

I have a 2015 VW Golf SEL Wagon, it looks to be around a $28500 value, question besides the reduction in price due to driving more (the car currently has 15K on it) does it make sense to hold the car until the just before May 2018 deadline. It looks to me it will still have the $28.5 K less the extra miles I'd drive over the next couple of years. $28.5K is only 1500 less than I payed for it new a year ago. If this is true I might as well just keep driving it to the deadline before turning it in. I only drive around 10K miles a year.

Given that I am being generous with my estimated mileage it looks like I'll be at about what I paid for it. I would hope that they also have some way of including warranties and maintenance plans and such. I like the car but given changes in my commute among other things I think I would probably take it and get a gti if the dealer will work with me or a wrx because why not.
I was looking for an excuse to take it though so I would understand why other 2015 owners would be a bit irked.
