Newbie-2011 golf tdi ecu swap steps?

Hi,
First time VW owner and need guidance...

Apparently my ecu is toast after a car wash gone awry.

So, im stuck in limp mode and what to replace the ECU with one i purchased from a local used parts place.

I am after basic steps involved (not how to remove and install the ecu as that part is straight forward).

I heard that somehow the info from the existing ecu has to be downloaded and then uploaded to the new one before it will work but....
A) i have no idea if that is accurate
B) i have no idea who / how to get that done (the vw dealer didnt seem very helpful on the phone)
C) is this even possible


I really appreciate any help pointing me to the solutions to my situation.

Yes it is possible.ECU has to be programed to car. It is not plug and play.
VW Dealer can not install Used ECU in your car , it is not possible with Factory tool to do this.

Good to know that it is do-able, but i am in canada (winnipeg) so wouldnt i need to find someone to do it closer to home? Im sure it cant be done remotely... can it?

No , it is not possible to do remotely.
I doubt you will find anyone locally or closer to do this.
2011 ECU is very difficult animal .

There's a whole lotta closer places to Winnepeg than Dallas that can do it.... Minnesota, for example...

Minnesota is closer but still hoping for closer yet. Anyone?

I really doubt an ecu is your problem. How did you conclude the ecu is bad?

The codes it is still throwing after being cleared, are no connection to ecu, radio intermittent signal, ecu low voltage, And a few other random ones. It just seems like computer is shot.

But if you have something I can do to verify if that isn't the actual problem I would be very greatful for guidance (I'm completely new to tdi's).

Please post full Auto Scan here form VCDS , then we can see what is going on.
Like mention above it may not be ECU problem, it may be blow fuse , bad fuse box or similar. Water can do many damages .

Or if you already have second hand ECU , plug in car and see what will happen.With not programed ECU car will start and run for 2-3 seconds.

Does it car start now at all ?

Yes it starts and runs in limp mode on the ecu we think is damaged.
Havent tried the new one to see what it would do.

Dont know if these will show up, but worth a try...

I dont think my friend has vcds i think jphe was using a snap-on scanner.

I have images from it but it wont let me attach them in the thread.

You need to find someone with VCDS and do full Auto Scan
Also you need to diagnose properly , if car starts and run , it may have other problems.
You really need to make sure 100% what causing this problem .
Just thinking that ECU is bad and throwing parts one by one is not good idea.

My 2011 once went into limp mode immediately after a careless underhood hose down. There was no MIL light. I think the turbo actuator was malfunctioning. Anyhow, after a 15 minute drive and restart, the car was fine. I'm much more careful to avoid the firewall area when washing the engine bay now.

I think we have put a good 45 min of driving in since it happened, but it still is sending the same codes. Im trying to find someone local that can plug in vcds and see what it says incase it shows differnet info that it does on the snapon tool.

Goint to try adding the screen outputs from the snapon scanner



If anyone sees clues to this mystery, please let me know. Im pretty sure it was colonel mustard in the library with the water hose.

IF (just go with me on this for a second) the ecu was the problem, can i just ship the ecu i got from the used parts guy to someone to delete the immobilizer? Would that make it so i could plug it in and get all my functions back? (Other than the immobilizer)

Thats what a website is implying but not sure if i am reading it wrong.

So ive been looking for solutions and someone recommended i send the used ecu to karmatdi to get them to do an immobilizer delete and have them program in my vin. I called them and got a price of $155 but i dont know anything about them... Are they legit?
Are the good?

Anyone that has trieed them, please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks I'll put in a call with th Regina guy. I thought most of the Malone tuners couldn't do immo deletes because the chip has to be unsoldered, programmed and then resoldered. However, if they can, that would be must better than going over the border for services for sure! Thanks

Update: i ended up shipping the used ecu to Malone tuning in BC. Ill update if it turns out to fit it.

If it was made after 1999 it doesn't need soldering.

Thanks Kevin, I sent it off to Malone in BC last week so I'm hoping it will work.

I'll update as soon as I get it back and test it.

Ecu came back from Malone yesterday after Immo defeat.
Installed, cleared all codes. Drove this morning to do a full cycle test and I am still in limp mode. If anyone sees anything in these codes that looks like my culprit, please let me know.
