Having problems with intermittent power brakes and it is getting more common. Also notice a loss of MPG. From searching it sounds like it might be the common problem of the vacuum hose to the booster.

Before just buying the part can someone point me in the direction of how to test and find where the problem lies for sure? The part I suspect (based on searching) is 1J0612041GD.

Thanks!

I think this can be caused by any leaky vac line.

I believe there is also a hard hose that you can visually check for cracks. Honestly, vac line should only cost around $10, I would just replace all the vac-lines and see if that fixes it. If not, start looking at the hose to the booster.
