VCDS & telephone coding

I recently purchased and installed an E-MFA gauge add-on unit from Kufatec. It's an interesting little package that adds oil & water temps and boost gauges to the MFD, but that's for another thread. My OBDII problem & question has to do with the way VCDS is seeing this upgrade.

Apparently this device installs itself as a telephone (like bluetooth) so it can display stuff in the MFD. I did an auto-scan (with auto-detect) and VCDS finds a new controller at address 77 (telephone), but in the initial scan it says:

Status: not registered.

When it scans each controller and gets to address 19 (CAN Gateway) it reports:

Address 19: CAN Gateway Labels: 1K0-907-530.lbl
Part No SW: 1K0 907 530 T HW: 1K0 907 951
Component: J533 Gateway H06 0071
Revision: H06 01 Serial number: 201008F2001961
Coding: E9807F07001303002002
Shop #: WSC 00066 000 00000

1 Fault Found:
01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded
000 - -
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 01100000
Fault Priority: 1
Fault Frequency: 10
Mileage: 19836 km
Time Indication: 0
Date: 2000.00.00
Time: 12:39:02

Lastly, the last controller at address 77 (Telephone) says.

Telephone
Cannot be reached

This is everything that is different from the auto-scan I did about 2 weeks ago (before I installed this unit). Now (finally!), my question. Is this a problem with the Kufatec E-MFA device, or is this simply a matter of my CAN Gateway not properly being coded for a telephone? In other words, can I fix this fault with VCDS? If so does anybody know how?

TIA

Don

If you post an auto scan of the vehicle and a link to the installation instructions, we can take a look.

Apparently Kufatec makes wiring harnesses for VW in Germany. There is no on-line installation instructions to link to, but installation is quite simple. You remove the radio and unplug the connector on the back. The Kufatec unit is attached to a "T" type wire harness. You plug the Kufatec harness into the radio and plug the radio wire into the other end of the harness. In other words it is just spliced into the radio harness. AutoScan below:

One quick note, since you mentioned the radio. Try to re-code the radio so it knows there is a 77 like module present. (+2 = CAN-Telephone Control, example 42401)

Update, once you have tried that.

OK, I'm pretty new to VCDS, and I'm not exactly sure what you meant by +2 in the radio, but here is what I tried (and it helped).

I selected the CAN Gateway (controller 19) and I went to the "installation list and checked the telephone box (77) and saved this value. Then I reset the fault code and tried another auto-scan. This fixed almost all of the error messages. In the first part it now says: Telephone status OK

Also under the CAN Gateway section it now says "No fault code found"

The only remnant of my previous errors is under the controller 77 (Telephone) it still says "cannot be reached" but this could easily be because this device is not really a telephone. I can live with this problem. I was really most concerned with the CAN Gateway fault, which now appears to be gone.

I did not try to make any changes to the radio itself (address 56) or to the actual device (address 77), do you think this would make any difference? I must go back to work now, so if you have any other suggestions, I will have to try them later.

Thank You

Don

Look at the coding chart that pops up when you go to the Coding function in 56-Radio. The relevant lines are:

00x?xxx: Radio Configuration I
+2 = CAN-Telephone Control

Your Radio's current coding is: 0040401. Try changing it to 0042401.

OK, I understood that, and I tried it. It didn't help. In fact it made it worse. After I added address 77 to the CAN Gateway installed list all of the errors went away except for the:
Address 77: Telephone
Cannot be reached

at the very end of the auto-scan.

When I tried to re-code the radio as described above, It said (at the top) 77-Telephone -- Status: Sporadic communication error 1000
I also got a new CAN Gateway error as follows:

1 Fault Found:
01303 - Telephone Transceiver (R36)
004 - No Signal/Communication - Intermittent
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00100100
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 1
Reset counter: 109
Mileage: 20014 km
Time Indication: 0
Date: 2000.00.00
Time: 12:28:33

Apparently this gauge add-on works at the telephone controller address, but it doesn't act like a telephone. When I told the radio there was a telephone the CAN bus was not happy. I set the radio back to 40401 and cleared the fault and all is well - except that it doesn't act like a telephone, so I still get the:
Address 77: Telephone
Cannot be reached

at the end of the scan. It doesn't generate a fault code, it just doesn't respond like a telephone either. I think that I can live with this.

Thanks

Don

Correct, the Kufatec supplied add-on does behave like a telephone module but does not support diagnostics. You won't be free of faults when you have this installed, but if you can live with that there should be no other disadvantages.

BTW: You should still observe if there is any misbehavior now, we've seen a couple of cases where retrofitting 3rd party modules causes problems like excessive quiescent current.
