A buddy has a '97 TDI wagon that he uses for work. Engine is great, body is shot. He found an immaculate '97 with a VR6. Both are 5 speed.

Is this possible? Can just the engines be swapped with out removing tranny and Bell housing?

I understand, fuel tank, lines, exhaust, ECM, wire harness and all that will have to be swapped to.

I should state, he will only replace the TDI engine into the better body. The VR6 engine will be sold or what ever and the old body will be junked. Money really isn't an object as the guy is loaded. Just has a big up his but to keep the engine ??

First it would be much simpler and easier to take TDI and transmission as unit and bolt it into the gasser car. Frankly that will go faster than just about anything else about the swap.

Second you want to stick with the TDI gearbox for the ratios,
