public transportation that uses no fuel? Interesting!
Never said that..........what I said was that her mileage was far higher than the standard low 20's of the Rabbit - I'm guessing (no real way to say for certain) is that given 90% of the commute is by public transportation it would be closer to 100mpg.

I will just use the daily drivers for numbers:

'03 Jetta Variant TDI 5 spd - about 50 USmpg overall, 15,000 miles/yr.
'97 K15 pickup, 6.5 TD auto 4x4 - around 20 USmpg, 10,000 miles/yr.
'91 Golf Country 1.8 gasser, 5 spd, AWD - about 25 USmpg, 10,000 mi/yr.
'90 Miata 5 spd. 1.6 gasser, almost 30 USmpg overall, 6,000 miles/yr.
varioius Kawasaki dual sports - about 40 USmpg overall, 6,000 mi/yr.

You don't want to know what the work trucks and race cars get!

Avg. Family MPG up 6.7 since 09

In 09 my JSW TDI, Mazda 3, and LR3 had a combined household avg of 29.2.

Now my 09 JSW has become a 15 Golf, the Mazda3 has become a 13 Golf TDI and the LR3 is a 12 JSW, netting out a household mpg now of 41.5 or a 12+mpg gain.

Also cost per mile has gone from a household avg. of .116 cents per mile, to .047. We drive combined around 49k miles. If my math is correct that is a savings of over 3,000 dollars

Of course gas prices are lower now and a factor but still cutting fuel costs more then in half per mile

Seems like we focus so much on our individual cars MPG, but I thought it would be interesting to see how my families avg. mpg aligned with others in the forum. We all have different vehicle to meet the needs and people in our lives, and this will look at the total impact of the vehicles we use and need or don't need in our family's. This also could be very useless information but it gives us a chance to waste time at our computers.

We are a 3 car family until my soon to be 15 year old gets his license next year.

2009 Jetta Sportwagen (mine) 39.2
2008 Mazda 3 (#1 son) 30.3
2006 Land Rover LR3 (wifeys) 18.1:eek:

Average Household MPG 29.2

I suspect this is a low avg., but at least this will help everyone else feel good about theirs.
It would be great to see your math expanded to include miles driven per vehicle. That will give you a full picture of actual fleet fuel consumption.

Mine: 2019 Golf R DSG, Wife's: 2015 Golf Comfortline TDI
2004 TDI - 5.6L/100km (42 MPG)

2015 TDI - 5.8L/100km (40 MPG)

2000 BMW R1150GS - 8.5L/100km (27 MPG)

Yes, the cars get better mileage than the motorcycle and the motorcycle requires premium.

2013 JSW TDI (Enroute BB).......2017 Jetta 1.4 turbo 5M ....................
2013 VW JSW 6M TDI = 44.1 AND 2012 M-B C250 Coupe 1.8 gas turbo auto = 28.2

The average of the two is about 36 (but I drive the VW 10 miles for every Mercedes mile)

Statistics are NOT my thing. It's all good.

We've a VW Jetta TDI: 40.2 mpg over 76k miles.
a Toyota Tacoma: 26.2 mpg over about 65k miles.
a Mazda3 2.5: 36-42, 39.9, 35 and now showing 37 mpg on the 4th tank.

Before that, a 240D got 29.4 mpg over nearly 211k miles. Did 31 mpg after timing CHAIN replacement.

A VW Cabrio showed 32.1 mpg.

Ralph - not to be a purist - do your Mazda3 MPG calc's reflect miles driven/gallons pumped - -- - - - or are they from the MFI (on board calc's?)

all the best,

gallons per day/week/month would reflect a more accurate take on fuel consumption

I like the miles/gallon/year metric but I work in km and liters.

Off the top of my head approximately:

My Daily 2001 VW Golf TDI 5MT: 40,000 km / year x 6L/100km = 2400 L / year
My Other Car 2014 Honda Odyssey 3.5L 6AT: 10,000 km / year x 11L/100km = 1100 L / year
Wifes Car 2011 Kia Forte 2.0L 6MT: 20,000 km / year x 8L/100km = 1600 L / year

Yearly average for three cars: 5,100 L / 70,000 km = 7.23 L/100 km (32.3 MPG)

If I didn't have the TDI I would be driving the Honda van as my daily which would change the numbers:

My Car 2014 Honda Odyssey 3.5L 6AT: 50,000 km / year x 11 L/100km = 4950 L / year
Wifes Car 2011 Kia Forte 2.0L 6MT: 20,000 km / year x 8 L/100km = 1600 L / year

Yearly average for two cars: 6550 L / 70,000 km = 9.36 L/100 km (25.1 MPG)

Therefore driving the TDI improves our household MPG from 25.1 to 32.3!
