Hey I have a 2001 jetta alh. I did a oil change and decided to use 0w-40 and since then it has used about 2 liters in 5000km. I never had this when I was running 5w-40, it would use maybe .5 of a liter every 5000km. just curious if anyone else has had this. I think the turbo seals are leaking a bit as there is quite a bit of oil in the intake or a pvc vale. Lets just say I wont be using 0w-40 anymore.

The thinner the oil the easier it'll be for it to slip by things, 0/40 isn't a recommended oil for the tdi anyway is it? As far as I know it's 5/40 at best.

I also never aim to high when choosing my oil like no point in using the 507.00 stuff, something that's designed to work in my engine will do, no chocolate cam shafts for use to worry about for the ALH.

There are several 0w40s that are VW 505.00. 5w40 is specified for use only down to -30C, but even a 0w40 will be better below-20C.

Well ya thats why I used it. Obviously she didnt like it haha
You might keep using it a few more intervals to see if consumption subsides, or see if there is an actual hardware problem that's just being magnified by the lighter base stock.

Which 5w40 were you using before?

If there are no noticeable leaks, I would pull the turbo hose off of the bottom of intercooler and see how much oil runs out. Maybe turbo bushing is leaking.
How many km on the engine?

Its the turbo hands down. I already know its leaking but my comsumption jumped quite a bit when switching oil. Its has 270,000km original turbo as well

At that rate just put the correct oil in there and you should be on all of the newer viscosity by the time of the next oil change. :D

YES! Check to make sure you're not pooling up a bunch of oil!

Have you noticed more smoke out the tail pipe since the switch?

Wait. I use Mobil 1 0-40 year round. I've not had excessive oil consumption. This is mostly because I can't find 5-40. Should I be worried?

As long as the oil meets spec (either VW or industry rating [as approved by VW (most folks overlook this one)]) and it works for you then life is good!

Oh, okay. It's VW approved. IIRC, the Mobil1 5-40 is NOT approved.

No issues using Mobil 1 0w40, the latest flavor is better than ever. TDT 5w40 is permissible too, as the ALH doesn't need VW approved oils. TDT and other similar oils meet industry approvals, that UhOh is talking about.

For VE TDIs...

VW 505.00
API CH-4 (of which CJ-4 supersedes)
ACEA B3 or B4

...in a grade appropriate for the expected temperatures.

In your location, I would go with a 0w40 or 0w30 (of correct specs)

Thanks, Bob, that's it! "CH-4" is what I was trying to refer to earlier (in some other thread maybe?). And, as one would discover, we're now well beyond that with today's "CJ-4."

For our VEs CJ-4 is good to go. As you note, it then becomes one of selection for viscosity.

Mobil has a LOT of "Mobil 1" oils! Here's something that would likely cover anything that we'd run in to (though likely overkill for most):

https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1-turbo-diesel-truck (5w-40)

I wish we had full numbers like that for the Rotella T6 (http://www.shell.com/rotella/products/t6.html).

We are getting off-topic, but...

Here's the data sheet for T6: http://www.epc.shell.com/Docs/GPCDO...Shell_Rotella_T6_5W-40_(CJ-4)_(en-US)_TDS.pdf

Mobil has several oils in the US that would be permissible in a VE TDI, not taking into account ambient temps:

Mobil 1 0w40
Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40
Delvac 1 ESP 5w40
Mobil 1 ESP 5w30
Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40
Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30
Mobil 1 5w50
Mobil 1 15w50

The below only meet MB specs, but still could be used:

Mobil 1 Formula M 5w40
Mobil 1 ESP 0w30
Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w40 (no longer available, replaced by ESP X1 0w30)

Could be some I missed...
