clutch won\'t engage, sometimes

2006 Jetta TDI 5 spd manual with only 21 miles on the odometer.
Started it up put it in gear and let out the clutch. No response, will not engage, tried neutral and other gears, same story.
Turned everything off, started it back up and now things are back to normal.
What's going on?

Anyone hear of this problem?

Can you describe your previous experience with manual gearboxes?

Do you have brake bleeding equipment?

My most recent experience with manual gearboxes has been 134k miles use of my '98 A3 Jetta TDI 5 spd.
Yes I have brake bleeding capability, but my first thought would be if I had a hydraulic problem that it would fail to release rather than fail to engage.
Did you catch the part about this being a new 2006 that had just been picked up at the dealership?

Thanks

Talk about a lemon

Take it back to them and ask for a new car, or to fix the problem entirely. That's a bit of a joke honestly.

Yes, I did, that's why this is most curious. Can you visually inspect the shift linkage to ensure everything is snapped in place?

Re: clutch won\'t engage, sometimes

I haven't inspected anything down there visually, but I will do that.
As far as the dealership is concerned, I have called and of course no one has ever heard of one exhibiting this symptom, but if I'll bring it in, etc., etc., etc., I have little trust of their not screwing up more than they fix.

Thanks

I hear ya. If that's the case, why not wait to see if it happens again? There really can't be too many possibilities with such a simple mechanism.

Is operation normal with the linkage, otherwise?

Re: clutch won\'t engage, sometimes

I drove it on home after that (34 miles city stop and go), shift linkage and clutch seemed just fine. I'm just afraid to let the wife drive it by herself until I find out why that happened.
Maybe it will happen again in the daylight so I can look down there to see what is happening.

Thanks again

Did you ever work out anything else with this?
