TDI shutting down while driving

A friend of mine is having a problem with his Mk4 Golf TDI, 1999 AGR engine code (similar to ALH).

When he is driving the engine cuts out (and the glow plug lamp lights), occaisionally he can restart it straight away, but sometimes he has to wait 15 seconds-ish before getting the glow plug light to come on and go off again.

When I look for any fault codes using VAG-COM there are none, however I check it after the ignition has been off. Do I need to check it when the ignition is still ON? while the car has shut down? Which will be a bit hard to do!!!

Any help would be gratefully received.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Exactly the same advice you just received over on the Vag-com list. Don't try to test it, just replace it. Relay 109 has been known to fail (the original black version). Replace it, and your troubles will likely be over.
