2000 Beetle 1.8t convert 4 pin radiator fan to 3

I'm working on a 2000 1.8t Beetle. I replaced the whole radiator fan assembly which fit perfect until I went to plug it in. The original large fan had 4 wires going to it, and the replacement only has three.

I found one other person on a random site that was going to hook the low and medium speeds from the harness to the low speed on the new fan. He never reported back if it worked though. Has anyone here done this successfully?
