Hi,
I have a 2005 vw golf mk 5 1.9 tdi (105) and I've had this issue of grinding in first since I bought it. The car has currently done 133k miles.
Basically what's happening is that when your coming to a junction and your slowing down, I will put the car in first but will make a grind noise. This noise won't happen when I'm at a stand still.
Before I take out the box and inspect, has anyone had anything similar to this previously?
I have a replacement gqn gearbox at home from a vw touran 1.9 if need be but is a 6 speed as mine is a 5 speed.
What would be the best option to do? Change gear box or inspect for damage on current box? Also if I do go down the route of swapping gearbox to the gqn, would there be a parts list on parts which need to be changed like gearbox mounts or drive shafts etc.
This is my first post so I apologise if I've missed anything out.

Sounds like 1st gear synchronizer ring is shot. At best new ring. At worst new ring, gear, ring, slider, dogs and slim chance shift fork.
