ABS, ESP and Brake Lights on Dash

Hello All,

I'm hoping that maybe someone will be able to help with an issue? I have with 3 lights that I have on the dash. All came up at once upon starting the car.

They are the ESP (amber), ABS (amber) and the brake light, flashing red and beeps 3 times - they stay on.

I have ran VCDS on it and got :-

Problem was, when I went to Security access - 16, it would not accept the 40168 code.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be the issue or any other code I could use? Is there a way to reset the security code??

Tru turning the steering wheel lock to lock.
Similar things happen when you disconnect the battery.

If resetting the steering calibration does not work, Try cleaning all the grounds. I am unfamiliar with the Polo, presumably is also has and engine space fuse/relay box that has a number of fuse links & connections it's exterior, if so, clean those connections also.

You got that from him refusing to paste the complete info, omitting the "VCDS 12.12.0" part?

Honestly, I was wanting to see if there were other issues in other modules. But there is no reason to edit out info from VCDS. No one is paying for internet by the byte.

I am no nearer finding out what the issue may be, but looks like the abs module has lost its coding?

I have 2 scans from my polo, one when there were no lights on the dash and a scan when I do have lights on the dash.

The latest scan is done with VCDS 17.1 (lights on dash) , the earlier one with 15.7. (no lights on dash)

Pirate boy hasn't been around for almost a year. You might need to let everyone know what issue you are tackling... bonus points if you include a full VCDS Auto-Scan.

LOL, didn't even notice the time lapse! He ain't gonna help......

I didn't notice the time lapse either, Bob.
Guess we'll just hafta discover it all over again!
I will try to post a scan in the near (couple of weeks) future as I am going on a vacation for a while and not able to go to where the car is and run a scan just now.

Briefly, I was getting spurious "steering angle" alerts on the dash, read some posts and figured it was just one of those weird things.

Then suddenly as I was going around 45mph and not braking or steering, the brakes applied and the car veered to the right. Steering angle light and ABS light flashing like mad. At least I was not in traffic!

I STOMPED the brakes REAL HARD a couple of times, brakes released andI carefully drove back home, about 3 miles. VCDS threw ONE code: "open or shorted sensor sensor in the Left front wheel."

Replaced left front wheel sensor. Drove car. Did the steering wheel check thing turning ~30 deg, etc. Warning Lights still ON.

Maybe you can give me some help. I am having some of the same issues.

I have a 2011 Golf. I am getting the airbag, abs, and tire pressure warning lights on start. When the car starts moving I get the anti skid warning light. I also get a brake warning light, with a service brakes message. Sometimes the brake light clears itself, sometimes I have to shut the car off, then restart the car for it to clear. These warnings started around July 2019.

A couple of months before I started receiving these warnings, I got a steering wheel warning light, which I could clear by turning the steering wheel, full lock, both directions.

I checked the wheel speed sensors, and they all matched wheel speeds.

Yes, the last two scans have the same faults.

Terminal 30 is basically "the battery". So it would imply you have a weak battery. Inspect and address issues with the battery as needed.


The codes in the J527, could be the electrical part of the ignition switch is failing. Back when I was at the dealer, we'd have to replace those on the older mk5 every so often for codes like that. Drop the steering column trim pieces out and from there you'd have access to it. I think it would be part number 1K0 905 849 A on your vehicle.

Again thank you for the help. I have replaced the main battery within the last year, so I don’t believe that is a problem.

I have purchased a steering column from a disassembled car. If I change the ignition tumbler, will I need to recode the car? If so, am I able to accomplish this with the VCDS that I currently have, from Ross-tech?

Go ahead and put an overnight trickle charge on that battery (check electrolytes, connects) and see if that helps.
Believe there is an RFID chip in that area, but replacing the tumbler should not require programming. I've not done this, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

But, the new key fob remotes for the new key tumbler, will most likely not work , to unlock and lock the car, correct?

I've never been in there, but I don't believe the tumbler has any electronics, the receiver chip is mounted separate, so the remotes should still work.
