I'm quickly approaching the 40,000 mile service on my 2002 Jetta. I've decided to do all the work myself (since the dealer wants about $400), but I'm wondering about checking the transmission fluid.

Do I need to put the vehicle up on jackstands to get an accurate measurement, or can I take a guesstimate when I have it up on ramps?

Thanks!

You want to check the transmission fluid because.......? You have an automatic? If yes, I hope you have VagCom, Bentley manual, and VAG 1924 if you need to add ATF. Of course if you just want to check the Final Drive oil level, then the answer is on level ground.

At 40,000 miles, 10 days from now for me on my 2002, I will change the oil and filter, fuel filter, and pollen filter. And look all around for any strange signs of where. Oh, yeh, rotate the tires.

Duh. Sorry - I deleted the part about manual transmission.
Guess I could have been a little more clear.

Ya, I'm doing all the other stuff, too.
