help! - oil leaking bottom of oil filter housing

When I took the skid (stock) plate off and looked at the oil filter housing (flange), it was leaking oil a bit. My question is which parts could be the culprit? maybe the gaskets between oil cooler and sealing plugs? (picture on Bentley page 17-10).

The leak isn't too bad. Should I wait until next oil change and replace the parts? I think the gaskets for oil pan is bad too.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You got it - most likely the gasket between the oil cooler and oil filter housing. Kind of a square section o-ring, if I recall correctly. You have to drain the coolant and oil to change this.

Re: help! - oil leaking bottom of oil filter housi

I noticed from Bentley that there are 2 different gaskets: one below the oil cooler and one top of the cooler. Do I need to replace both? I was only be able to find one gasket part number (038 117 070)--looks like it's for the gasket below the cooler. anyone know the part number for the other gasket?

If you're gonna remove the oil cooler, you might as well replace both gaskets.

Having replaced both seals recently I will tell you that you do not need to remove the cooler/drain the coolant, just push it out of the way. Part numbers are 038 117 070A for the top ring, 038 117 070 for the bottom.

awesome. thanks for the info.

What about the engine oil? does it need to be drained at all?
And what tools are needed?

If your doing this, you might consider upgrading to a larger oil cooler at the same time. It will speed up your warmup time, as well as keep the engine cooler more consistantly.
