When I drain and refill the coolant on my Golf, I usually have to drive it a few miles to bleed out the trapped air. So no heat for those first few miles.

Certainly could be. A Scan-Gauge II or similar will give you coolant temp. . . cold coolant makes for cold 'hot' air.

Yes, VCDS will do the same and a lot more, but I only drive around with a laptop when it's absolutely necessary.
