2002 Golf TDI repair or replace engine?
I have a 2002 Golf TDI that I purchased new. It has a manual trans with lots of new parts (turbo, clutch, alternator). The engine went out and the mechanic disassembled it and showed me the damaged valves. He claimed it would need a replacement engine as there might be damage to the cylinder walls (that was not evident to me). I really liked my Golf, but I have put so much money into it in the last 10,000 miles I am wondering whether to go a head and try and fix or just sell it for parts. while in the mechanics custody, some one ripped out the front VW emblem and damaged the front grill. A minor cost compared to the engine issue. He did not assume responsibility for that so I had him return it to me. I have several questions for veteran TDI members and mechanics.
1. Can the valves be repaired without pulling the engine?
2. How would I check for more than valve damage?
3. If I were to replace the engine-better to buy used engine or rebuild it myself. I have a moderate level of mechanical skill and many tools necessary for the job such as engine hoist, engine stand, pneumatic tools, etc.
4. Do I need to get the computer program to get running? How much does it cost?
5. Other than a slight rock ding on the hood, the car is in very good shape. What would it be worth sold as is? Any info would be helpful-thanks.
