Hi Everyone. There seems to be a lot of different topics discussing the same item. Where to hold TDI Fest 2001. Here is the plan of "approximatly" where the events will be held. A big determing factor is a co-ordinator, so we will deal with this once the general location has been determined. My overall plan was to shift the location close to the West coast for those that couldn't make it this year and in the middle after that. Perhaps 2003 it will be in Europe, but well see as that is still far away. Anyway in point for here is the plan:

* 2000 - East Coast
* 2001 - West Coast
* 2002 - Central
* 2003 - Europe?

The voting booth has western "regions" for people to vote on. The poll will close on September 18th. Once the region is figured out I'll be activly looking for a co-ordinator.

Thanks,

Fred

PS Even people many people at TDI Fest thought this would be a good idea.

As stated in the thread I started, I will be more than happy to be the coordinator should the location be determined to be Arizona.

Between myself, babybenz, 2000 TDI Lover, morty and Arizona Mike (who all LIVE here) and Stealth TDI (who resides in El Paso but has volunteered what time he can) I think we have more than enough resources to facilitate the Fest successfully.

Also - there has been a lot of talk about Phoenix being "hell on earth", and hot in the summertime. Although we are a very warm climate, The temperatures during the first weekend in September are hardly a reflection of what Arizona IS during mid to late July (In essence, "hell on earth") which is technically "summer."

Arizona Mike - by all means, I'm not insulting your intelligence. Again, I've been here for 6 years and in that time (this year being the obvious exception) I don't think it has ever been 110 during the beginning of September.

For those of us who don't reside in deserts, the break-off point for when the heat becomes intolerable is less than 110* F.

My vote (and my wife's vote) is for a more temperate west coast area like the Pacific Northwest or Northern California. I hope to make a cross country run next year, anyway, and it would be good to be able to hit the TDIFest on my route.

Just my 1/50 of a dollar.

EVL DZL, (Kevin) no offence taken, I agree. September is not as hot as the peek of the summer heat that we get. I am just concerned that most would better enjoy visiting this area when their home state / country is in the current state of being a frozen tundra and Mickey is slapping the D.S.
out of the snow bunnies. Most of the events are outside and I try to limit my activities in this heat to tubing down the Salt
River. I believe Valois has an excellent idea of making it a semi-annul event. This way when it's held during the summer season we could take a break from the heat
to attend at the other location. The only other concern I see is the other members living in the Midwest / Central states will want a fest in their location too. Either way I support any location / season that is decided.
Just my 2 cents

It looks like we can all agree on one thing - We each have our own 1/50th of a dollar!!

I guess I'm biased because I live here and don't mind the heat (during any time of the year.)

As far as being fair, I think the west coast is more than fair for 2001. Alternating (east, west, central, etc.) gives all those the joy or grief of travelling to exotic locales.

Anyhow, I agree - wherever it is, I'll support it.

Well the west coast is probably a good idea,
but please consider that Arizona would be closer than California, probably less expensive, and expenses determines many of our members ability to do things, once they
make the trip. Dry Heat will probably not be unbearable, Wilmington was almost 90 and the humidity was 100% at times. High temps always scare folks, just like -20 scares others, but with low humidity, they both are fun to play in. I would hope it would be a central location in the West, which will put it closer to the midwest, east, and Eastern
Canada. And with as large as we have grown,
once you pick a place, some will not like it or make it there, but you forge ahead with the best site with with most help, and it will be a success. The first one broke the ice, the next ones will have to live up to and exceed those in the past, I do not envy
the planners

Hey guys, I just got home. I can see the beach from my house, and you know what? The weather is absolutely perfect. No stifling heat or humidity. 78 degrees outside. I'm in shorts. I'm not sweating. The People in Califonia may be phony, but the weather's for real! I vote for Aptos, CA.

I drove real fast and took lots of chances!

Oh yeah, and another thing. I'd de willing to donate time and effort to getting things rolling. I got ideas. The wheels are spinning. I'm takin' names and writin' down numbers, yep, yep. Seriously, I do know who runs the show at Laguna Seca. Monterey County parks. Got da name and da numbah. I think The old Marina airport would work for Autocrosseses or drags. BTW, they run go-kart races there. I got a friend who's got a friend who's a semi-cool cop (cops are never totally cool [sorry any of you pro-cop types out there, no offence intended]) who's got a radar gun and might be able to afford other favors. I'm not exactly sure how to deal with this hotel and sponsor schmoozing stuff, but I do know how to bug people who do.

Hell, we got a whole herd of Winnebagoes! We're givinemaway!

GassinGerhard: What are you trying to say about the weather? It makes me wonder why I ever moved out here when I was born in Calif. Don't get me wrong, it's a dry heat.

Lets see......108 F is today's high in late September. I don't care HOW dry the heat is, since heat that much higher than my body temperature cannot possibly be any good for me. I suppose that is why a place like this is air-conditioned everywhere except outside, where we would be spending a fair amount of time.

Well, looks like it will be in either UT, CA or AZ. Thankfully there are a number of people who have volunteered to head this up in each of the above stats. I'm waiting for some more replies coming at the end of the coming weekend, and then we will have to determin in which of the above states this will happen in.

Gary, if it ends up being CA, LSR would be "Da Bomb!" How do those "other guys" arrange club events there? (well, besides throwing money at Monterey County, that is...)

I'll find out soon. I got the director of Monterey Parks number around here somewhere. I've called her to set up moto-cross races there before. It's all a matter of finding out what's on their schedule for a particular date and seeing if we can get squeezed in. I'm not sure about any fees involved with the main race track. I know they've let total amateurs out there before on many occasions. Wouldn't it be cool if we could get VWoA to put on one of their driver's schools there?

Gary, I asked the VW driving school person that question, and he had no clue and only suggested that I keep checking the website for updates. One would hope that VWoA would be able to put on one of their driver schools at LSR, SPR, or the one down south by San Diego. It'd be grand to have a TDI only GTG at LSR, but I'm not sure VW would be all that enthusiastic, seeing how TDIs are 1) such a HUGE part of their NA business, and 2) there are just SO MANY TDIs sold in California...

My vote is for Reno, NV.
1) relatively cool
2) cheap plentiful rooms
3) stuff to do
4) centrally located in the west.

Salt Lake also sound good, but no all night gaming. I think Phoenix is too hot in September any way you look at it.

I've had a few more pledges of help from local members if Utah gets the bid. But we probably won't. We haven't bribed anybody yet. (Where do you get hookers, anyway? Is there a mobil service? Do they have an 800 number?)

Well, shoot, if that's what it's all about, I need to get in on this!
Can I be the eccentric with a used Baby Benz 190d? It'll be a good comparison...

Will the location have a strip for racing?
Is there the possiblity for a local dealership/business to sponsor an event?
Group rates for hotels/meals? Hourly rates for the ... never mind.

Just thoughts; I wasn't there this year, so I haven't a clue if this was done...

Reno's fun but I always end up spending too much money there. There's the gambling, strippers, hookers, 24 hour all night bar getting liquored up action. Otherwise there's nothing to do, except maybe see the Harrahs car collection and all the other idiots like me from the Bay Area who frequent the place. Though they do have a decent VW dealership there.

Sorry GeWilli,

Central US/Canada will probably be next year. 2001 the west coast gets it as the east coast had the first.

Finalist in no specific order are:
* Phoenix, AZ
* Bay Area, CA
* Park City, UT

This was decided by:
* A number of volunteers expressing interest.
* Indication that the required items are near by.
* # of people living near these places.

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to find a winner (no bribs please), but will try figure it out soon, and will setup an area to get input from everyone.

Thanks for all the input up to now.

At the risk of actually "winning" the bid, I will say that a Park City location would be great in the summer. Temperautres in PC in the summer are generally in the 70s and 80s. Opportinities to hike and ride mountain bikes abound. Wold class fly fishing is a 45 minute drive from PC. Park City itself is a facinating old mining town-turned resort town. (Old cemetaries, mining related ruins and tunnel entrances, mining museum, etc. Not to mention extremely overpriced shops and restaurants. Kind of like a relatively affordable Vail or Aspen...only better.) LOTS of breathtaking scenic roads. Casinos 90 minutes west of Salt Lake. Lots of lakes & reservoirs in the mountains, just in case Ric wants to tow his PWCs out here. Really cool Air Force museum north of Salt Lake for those interested in old airplanes. (They still have an SR-71 on display, I believe.) The Lagoon Amusement Park for the kids, in case they get tired of watching old guys kick tires. Franklin Quest Field is here; one of the most beautiful AAA ball parks in the country. (And being triple-"A" you can be assured of seeing LOTS of home runs and scoring because there is no pitching to speak of.
) The list goes on and on.

Merna and I thought Utah would be a nice location when it was first suggested. We have travelled the area before and find it close to many national parks (Utah), yet away from the coastal crazies. Coming from NC.......every mile further east is 2 miles off the total trip for us. Sorry Gassen, but the SF cheese and wine crowd aren't impressed with soot (their loss).
2 votes for park City.
