The 1.6 diesel engine are made by the french group PSA ( Peugeot Citroen ), this engine is located on the Mazda 3 and the new minivam 5 series from MAzda.
Have them on all Peugeot and Citroen models, Volvo C30 and S/V50, Ford Focus and CMAX.
Subaru have the 2.0 diesel boxer, Mitstubishi have the 1.8, 2.0 (VW PD) and the 2.2 Renault.
Peogeut/Citroen have the 1.4,1.6,2.0,2.7
Honda have the 2.2 wonderful smooth engine on the Accord
Toyota have the 1.4,2.0 and 2.2 diesel engine
Kia/Hyundai have several, the latest is the 1.7 diesel
Mercedes have the 1.7,2.0,2.2,3.2 and so on
BMW have the 1.8,2.0,2.5,3.0 and so on
VW group have the 1.2,1.6,2.0,2.7,3.0 and so on
Renault have the 1.5,1.9,2.0,2.2 and 3.0 engine
Mazda 1.6 is well, lets just say its not from madza.
The cam shafts have given tons of troubles on the Mazda 6 models.
One main problem with mazda, Subaru and honda is the price of parts and service.
Toyota is one of the cheapest.
I may have missed some diesel engine, sorry

Mazda USA spokesman Jeremy Barnes in an interview with Green Car Advisor declined to disclose fuel economy, horsepower, torque and price for the new Mazda3, although did say a diesel version of the Sky engine would debut about 18 months after the gas version.

Still, the company said last year that the Sky engine may enable the Mazda3 to get as much as 40 mpg in highway driving, putting the car well into the hybrid fuel-economy range. The current Mazda3 gets about 29 mpg in combined city/highway driving in its manual-transmission 2.0-liter engine format.
It's going to be a while.

Well, Mazda technically did not make the whole car anyways. The 3, 5, 6 etc. are all Ford platforms, so putting someone else's engine in what is really someone else's car to begin with... what difference does that make?

Like I said before, Mazda's future remains to be proven now that Ford is essentially out of the picture, as all the current Ford-y platforms will be getting phased out the next cycle.

Still waiting for Subaru too.............
As I've said on this board a few times, the latest word from Subaru is "mid 2010s". My guess is they'll give serious consideration to a N/A diesel when the Euro 6 compliant engine is ready. They've also stated that they're developing an automatic transmission for the diesel as well. Currently it's manual only.

The effort by these Japanese manufacturers are getting very lame, almost every damn car model series sold in most worldwide market already have a diesel option, from Merc to VW to Honda to BMW to Jeep to Nissan to Subaru to Chevrolet, even Porsche has a diesel. Maybe we'll see a Ferrari or Austin Martin or a Lambo diesel super saloon before these Japanese model ever make it here.

I don't think you should be so quick to judge. European manufacturers have substantial government incentives for diesel in their home markets which focus their development efforts on diesels. Japan has no such incentives. Combine that with Japanese brands' higher standards for idiot proof usability and just enough difference in fuel and emissions standards in the USA and I can absolutely understandy why they've chosen not to bring their diesel cars here. For example, urea injection is something I just can't see Toyota or Honda putting on a car as it requires another maintenance operation. Maybe on a Toyota work truck, but not a family sedan.

Given the HPFP and intercooler ice/water buildup issues in the CR TDI's I would argue VW probably shouldn't have brought the car to the US yet either, it just wasn't ready.

Would Mazda even have the production economy of scale and available resources to compete in the future market? If VW isn't that big in north america, at least it's among the top three in many other parts of the world. Who is Mazda going to share parts and developmental cost with in the future? Not enough production volume... Amati died off while Honda, Toyota and Nissan had various degrees of success with their luxury brands.

At least as far as I can remember, since childhood, Mazda and Ford have always had very intimate coopertive relationship. All these engine/chassis flatforms like the Ford TX-3, Laser, Telstar, 323, 626 ... these were not only popular compact cars in Japan, but also in Australia, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines from mid 80's to at least 1995-2000. I am sure some of these designs probably made their way into Europe or North America (eg. Ford Probe). Ford's US product would never work in the global market, so Ford was trying to push European RWD product like the old Granada, Cortina and Seirra but at the end the bulk of the volume in non US market were Mazda designed FWD. Ford were buying a lot of Mazda cars.

Forget about powertrain, Mazda has a chassis problem in the coming years.... SAAB gradually died off because of this deficiency.

Mazda is working on a bunch of new in-house platforms, at least that is what the fellow at Mazda told me at NAIAS. But they are still probably 2 years out. In the mean time, you are seeing Ford actually bring more of its global models here, like the REAL Focus (albeit no diesel), as well as the C-max, which is based on the Focus and is essentially what the Mazda 5 is a rebadge of. Hard to tell the difference underneath between the Fiesta and the Mazda 2, supposedly much of that design was done under Mazda's watch. We'll see what the future holds, but they really had some decent cars back when they were doing them all to themselves. The Protege was a fantastic car for the money, and what Ford used as the underpinnings for the North American Escort from 1991 through 2000 until the Focus replaced it. I think money problems hurt them and allowed Ford to muscle in and virtually take over for a while.

My dealer group owns Mazda and Audi dealership and I was talking to the owner of the group today and he said next year SkyD diesels are coming. He's an avid Audi fan, drives TDis daily.

Not a big fan of Mazda: Volvo parts, Mazda and Ford parts are used all over their line up... It's a clusterfuk working on them.

Haha, yeah it has become a bit of a cluster**** working on them, depending on what all you are doing. Luckily the Ford software works perfectly fine on them, even ones that were not technically a badge-engineered Ford product, as they [Ford] did work with Mazda on all the USA-spec OBD stuff.

What is always aggrevating to me is that they never really fully integrated, so you have to play games trying to get parts... like when you need a PCV hose tube off of a 3, and the FoMoCo tag, complete with part number, is of no use to the Mazda parts guy, yet if you call a Ford guy, he immediately wants a VIN to even attempt looking something up.

The best was recently we had some guy come unglued when he needed a control arm for his Tribute. He was pissed about the price, but we insisted it was largely due to using genuine parts (we won't install Chinaloy Dorman rando-fit control arms on a customer's car). When he wanted to see the box, to verify it was indeed a genuine part we installed, he became irate when the box we showed him had a 'Motorcraft' tag on it, with a little 'Mazda' tag off to the side... so I politely showed him the tag in the door jamb: "Manufactured by Ford Motor Company for Mazda Motor Corporation" Then he REALLY got pissed. ;)

I could write a book about the silly stuff I see, as I suppose anyone in a trade or customer service position could.

I should be thankful so many people won't read their owner's manual, but I'm not. I really take no pride cashing in on someone's ignorance, but it happens every day I guess, in some way.

This may seem a little out of left field based on whats going on, but would biodiesel work in this car, like higher than B5? The only reason I ask is because there are more stations with B99 popping up in my area so I am going to start using Bio-diesel a little more frequently and if I ever were to buy one of these in the future (yes I know its long off if it ever actually happens) I would like to know if this would be possible.

I know the current TDI generation have issues with blowing fuel pumps on biodiesel that is too concentrated so I probably won't be buying one...plus the emission system is going to be one expensive replacement I would never want to deal with since I would plan on owning it a long time if I bought new, so I'm just hoping a car that comes out in diesel in the next couple years will be b99 friendly when I go to purchase my next vehicle (I caught the Diesel bug).

I have mine for 8 months and has over 15000km, never once de filter issue showed up. Never onced put diesel in those " cheaper places" where those type of issues may come up. Have friends that had those issues, every car make has them, but then again they do 2 things I don´t.
1. I get average of 6.0l/100 or 38mpg US, others get 5.0 or lower ( 48-55mpg) this around town. Highway at low speeds ok.( here highway is 120km/h speed cams are only over 145/150km/h). Meaning driving like an old l*** ends up regenerating the filter to often and the problem is stopping theis when it´s regenerating, specially in the city.
2. It´s a known fact that cheaper gas price places do have less additives to the gas. Newer engines need best rated fuel, I never onced yet put fuel at those places in my CR engine. Bio-diesel is a NO NO. My fuel cap has sticker saying that
"Bad "fuel you get less milage, more smoke( even if you cannot see it) bad for the filter, and less power.
Had before a Renault with a 1.9diesel engine and that thing took every type of fuel, and when I heard the engine knocking metal I new the fuel is bad.( made more smoke, less power, less milage)
On another hand now we do get now the new 1.2tsi engine with 85hp or 105hp.
It´s available on the Golf, really nice engine.
Also have the 1.4tsi with 120hp, 140 and 160 ( this one uses compressor and turbo combined)

"In discussion with Mazda executives earlier this week at the Chicago Auto Show, Leftlane learned that the automaker will make some sort of announcement about its future diesel offerings at the New York International Auto Show in April."

I take this to mean that their announcement will be that they are NOT going to offer a diesel car in North America. It's probably just a ploy to get a bunch of reporters to pay attention to their annoucement. Otherwise who would care what they have to say?

If Mazda is offering a diesel car for sale in the USA or Canada by the end of 2011, I'll print this out and eat the sheet of paper. I'll put it on youtube so y'all can watch and laugh. Remind me. (It has to be in mass volumes, not just a limited production. Anyone has to be able to just go and buy one...like they are REALLY selling them.)

We've been tormented with news like this before many times, and have been let down every single time. With a 100% track record of this type of news being total BS, I don't think I'll have to eat my words anytime soon. If they do it, that's great. And I hope other manufacturers follow because I'm not buying a Mazda. ;)

Amen, new Mazdas are complete ****. When our owner bought a Mazda franchise and the dealership wasn't ready yet I got stuck working on quite a few of them. Jap cars use the cheapest fastners/hardware ever and that's not my biggest gripe about em. It's the hype from owners of Hondas n Toyotas and overall Japs that's really gets to me... They are not any more reliable than any other car.

You must not know much about the newer Mazdas... as I said in a previous post, they are basically all Fords now, save for the CX7, MX5 and RX8, although the MX5 uses a Ford engine now, and the CX7 always did. (The MZR engine was jointly developed with Ford, and used the Ford Zetec and Duratec 4 cylinders as its foundation).

The 3 is a Focus. (as is the later Volvo S/V40)
The 5 is a Focus with a top-hat (C-max)
The 6 is a Mondeo (related to our Fusion)
The B-series is a Ranger
The CX9 is a Ford Edge/Lincoln MKX

So any blanket statement you may have about "the Japs" simply does not apply to those vehicles. Those cars are as much a Mazda as a Routan is a Volkswagen.

My reason for saying I won't buy a Mazda is simply because I don't like the way they look. Also, they don't sell anything I want. I don't know anything about their quality. I just think they're ugly.

...and they're not going to sell a diesel one in Canada or the USA. If they do, they'll somehow make it not worth buying. For example, maybe they'll only offer diesel in a fully loaded, very expensive model, thus negating any potential economic benefits of the diesel option.

If Mazda imports a Mazda 6 with an economical diesel engine (45 mpg or so), stick shift in all trim levels, and prices the car below Jetta I would be very interested. The difference in price between gas and diesel in the Jetta is just to much to justify. What I would really like is for VW to import the 1.6 TDI in a lower trim Jetta or Golf and price it right. I expect I will be waiting a long time for that.

April 22nd is the start of the NY Auto Show.
Rumor is Mazda will have an announcement about diesel during it's press conference.

Mazda will debut the 2012 Mazda3 at the NYAS with it's SKYACTIV engine. http://www.caranddriver.com/news/ca...get_face_lift_163-hp_skyactiv_engine-car_news

I'd be surprised if Mazda starts it's diesel program with the 3. More likely a SUV will get the Sky D to start.

Becoming impatient waiting for more diesel's.
Thankfully VW, Audi, BMW, and Daimler maintain diesel presence.

The 1.6 is a lot cheaper than the 2.0 in Europe... but Americans seem to demand more power in average. The average German car has 133.6hp, the average US car... 210?

Because we have small penises here. Or at least, they appear that way, since we are all so fat. I simply could not find mine this morning since it was so cold in the house.
