I noticed oil leaking on the top of the engine and found that the "extension" piece that goes from the valve cover up to the top of the plastic upper cover is broken. I was able to retrieve the little metal piece as well as the broken bits of plastic. Anyone know where I can get this piece for my 97 Passat TDI? The part number on the unit is 028 115 301... Also, what is this known as "officially" and any clues on why it broke? Thanks....

Not sure what it is officially known as, but from the part number you gave, you can try a local dealer or http://www.impexfap.com I took a look at impex, $6 for the part.

As for why it broke...dunno really. Plastic gets brittle, and it's possible that someone tried to overtighten the oil fillter cap once too often or something along those lines.
