Hi all! Haven't posted in a long time. I have a very nice 03 Golf TDi with a failing 01M auto. Have a chance to buy an 02 golf 1.8 with a 5 mt cheap. Anyone know if this will bolt up? Thanks in advance

Yes it'll bolt up but wrong gear ratio, the gears are too short, but if you found a TDI 5 speed the golf would have all the other parts needed for the swap and the 1.8 has better ratios than the 2.slow fwiw

Swap it and put in a taller 5th, that'll give you an overdrive, and start in 2nd maybe? NB the ring and pinion difference.

Use this site to figure revs and speed, realise the 2 motors have different rev ranges.

I've wanted to rob the first 3 gears from a 1.8T car for my tuned car, they are longer and then find the .681 unicorn gear set for 5th and a peloquin for good measure

Final drive is still all wrong for TDI, they are a 3.9:1 or something like that. Better than a 2.slo transmission by not by much.

That's why I'd only use the gears and not the ring and pinion

Pulling individual gears is a whole lotta work! 5th gear is pretty simple - the rest are very involved.

If you're doing a full rebuild to include syncros, you're already doing that anyway but I agree, it looks like a huge pita

There are just too many to list....
VAG's gas engines that were sold alongside the ALH and BEW era cars were geared painfully low. You do not want to use that transmission.

Having owned lots of these cars, including those cursed with spark plugs, I can say this with good authority: looking down and seeing your engine whizzing along at 4k RPMs on the highway is not something you want to see with the TDI.
