in 100's of conversions 2 or 3 maybe broke a fork but its still an easy fix.

In the process of getting my LSD (along with DC stage 3 clutch) and steel shift forks installed into the 02Q for my MK7 Golf, and this thread has been read over many times in preparation to this project. I tend to take my time when doing anything on my cars, and this being the first time I've ever been into a transmission I really took it easy. I could not get the case halves separated, and wound up with a permanent reminder how NOT to get them apart. So, after some thought I came up with a super easy method!

The seal broke almost immediately and then I began going to town on the input shaft bearing with the dead blow to get the halves all the way apart.

Once apart I was very happy with what I found inside. ZERO brass shift forks on any gears, and what looks like updated sliders. In all of my reading about these 02Qs, I've yet to come across any without at least one set of brass forks inside. Here is a side by side of the steel forks I got in case I did have brass ones for the 1-4th gears next to the ones in this particular 02Q.
In my VW service manuals, they reference a "Reinforced" version of this gearbox. This can be my only assumption as to why there are different shift forks here.

Also, at least on this "high-torque" version of Peloquin, there are only ARP bolts..no nuts. The diff had four extra bolts included that are used to pull the ring gear down, then install the remaining bolts with connecting plates.

Awesome thread - I lost 1-2 on the way home last Friday (mk4 golf 130K) seems like the rivets gone luckily I was at a stop and it fell out in neutral so I could limp it home in 3rd.

has anyone tried using M8 countersunk in the Shift fork?

Also whats the difference between this and the 02N boxes? I know some internals are interchangeable and both the 02m and 02N fit in the same VW vehicle platform (seat leaon& Golf?
only asking as I have a FWD 02N sat here although I have an 02N 4motion in the sharan I assume that's just a diff-erence to allow the Haldex coupling to work?

Thinking about picking up a six speed and LSD, so I installed the google chrome extension that fixes photobucket links (for the time being) and made a pdf of the first page with all the images. I uploaded the pdf to the TDI Club image gallery so it won't be lost again- you can find it here: http://pics.tdiclub.com/showphoto.php?photo=126080&title=02m-lsd-install&cat=517

I do have a question for folk around this - I have heard "rumors" that folks have used 02Q transmissions in MK4 applications - and drilled the case for the missing mk4 speed sensor - but I have not seen anyone personally claim they have done this. Can anyone here claim success using an 02Q in a mk4?

I put a set of the steel 02Q forks in a 02M but not sure I like them. They have plastic tips and have heard some complain that they are gone after 70k miles.
Much prefer the modified brass forks.

There are brass replacement tips available. My 02Q oddly had different version of plastic tips along with completely different OE steel forks.

I am recently getting some bad noise coming from either the axles or differential on decel that has been getting more and more consistent (worst in gears 1-4). Does it with clutch in or out so ruled out clutch clatter. It does it only on decel, and doesn't seem to make a difference when shifting weight by yanking on the steering wheel. It's wheel speed dependent, not engine speed. Any thoughts??

Forgive me for quoting an old post, but can anyone shed some light on this? Now that we in the USA have access to TDI 6-speed gearboxes in the 02Q, I have been wondering this as well. $2k+ for a used euro 02M box conversion isn't in the cards, but finding a 02Q for $150 is a lot more attractive. The process for drilling the VSS seems straightforward enough, split the case, measure, drill.... but all I have heard is that people have done it but I have not seen any pictures or anything. Also have heard that the 02Q has different axles than 02M so I am assuming that to make it work in a MKIV you would need custom axles?

Thanks,

@ryanp would you happen to know if the wavetrac 10-309-191WK fits the 02N? it's quite similar to the 02M, as i heard, unfortunately i have no 02m to compare it against.

It is unlikely to be the same, but if you send me the VIN I can do some digging around
Thanks

Sure, it's WVWZZZ7MZ3V056031, 4motion sharan. I have an extra tranny sitting on the floor, took out the diff and pondered on installing a cheap chinese spring LSD emulator like they do on the civics, but i run the car many many kms and couldn't live with myself doing this :).

Would I be correct in saying that if the bolt pattern on the diff gear is the same, and also the splines are matching, than i'm golden? For the life of me i cannot find anywhere any differences between the 02n and 02m, except anecdotal evidence that the 02N is "the heavy duty version" of the 02M.

I looked and the Diff is an 02N and the bearings either side are 091517185D (50X80X20) and 098409321B (80X125X29) which is different to 02M and 02Q Diffs

so sleeves or custom bearings should solve the issue?

About to do this again to a 2015 Golf and wanted to make sure the process is the same as the 02M we did about 11 years ago before I ripped it apart.
My 15 has the 02Q correct?
And who has the best deals on LSDs now?

It is more or less exactly the same process. You just might need a few different seals depending which your box has.

We can help out with a Quaife and all the parts if needed ;-)
Peloquin were out of stock last time we checked

Cheers

Thanks. Once I get my car apart and 2nd engine to MrChill we’ll be giving you a call for parts.
My CRUA seems to have randomly skipped time, pistons met the valves which blew the rockers apart leaving needle bearings all over under the valve cover.

the shift fork mod I can do the same as the 02M correct, just blolt/weld the forks on to remove the pins?

Darkside has the all metal forks that don't require any welding. Not sure if those guys figured out which gearbox codes have the newer version that they carry now, but my particular PFN coded 02Q had them installed from factory. Guessing my car was a demo car at birth.

We don't have a definitive list for the new forks unfortunately.

i was going to mod mine because it’s not that hard and I don’t want to spend the 3-400 on new ones.

no idea what happened, only like 20k on the new belt. Someone from Europe on FB was saying rocker failure is a known issue on the EA288 which is news to me, said he sees them a lot where he’s at. I got a new junk yard motor for $600 with 75k on it I plan on putting in with a new Tbelt, CP3, larger turbo and possibly head work.
just lighting all my money on fire
