Are CB radios coming back into vogue? I had one in a 1967 Beetle in the mid-1970's.

I have not seen one in a car, or heard of anyone using them (except for truckers) since I left Detroit in 1977.
I don't know if they are coming back or not, but IMO, I think that they are way better than GPS and much more detailed. I had mine back in my Jetta on my recent trip to Florida, and loved it. I would suggest a linear of at least 200 watts, 400 is perfect. (Get a linear that both amplifies on reception and output, not just on output.) Above that, you're blowing everybody else off. With a CB, you get instant information, and actual road conditions.

Well the thanksgiving trip wasn't too bad. The snow on the way out didn't make much of a mess on the roads, but that didn't stop people in SUVs from ending up in the ditch (at least 4 separate incidents).

A pic from I-70 before Breezewood.

The traffic coming home on Sunday night kind of sucked though... ended up taking a few detours to avoid parts of I-76.
Look like we were making teh same trip at the same time

I never run my receive amp, because it just amplifies the noise. Maybe if I'm trying to tune in skip, but not when I'm cruising on the highway.

Surprising you find time to drive. I don't even like running a Scan Guage: Too distracting.

You need to get a BlendMount for the V1. Are you using a V1connection to send the display to your phone or the Remote Display?

... None :S
The V1 is Drew's, they aren't legal in VA and the Troopers have detector detectors and will write you a nice fat ticket if you have one.

As far as the scan gauge being distracting... I don't think I've touched it since I put it in. It only displays temperatures and boost.

Oh, that's right, VA is the only remaining state that bans RWRs. However, the "detector detectors" can't detect the V1 unless it is only a few feet away due to Mike's shielding design.

Oh yes they can! The Spectre 4 radar detector detector is the latest and greatest tool of the Virginia State Troopers (it's actually been around for several years) and can easily sniff out a Valentine1. There are a couple of detectors out there than can hide from the Spectre 4, but not the Valentine1.

Drew brought the remote display that is integrated into the power outlet, but I didn't like it because it forces me to look down. Using the built-in display on the V1 allowed the alerts to be in my field of vision, which is what I prefer. I see no need to hide the display, as I'm not doing anything illegal as long as I'm outside of Virginia.

I like the V1 very much, especially with the remote rear view mirror displays that are on the market for it.

Yes please! :)

Where would you put the actual unit though?
Anywhere would be fine. My goal is for an easy to see and recognize display, not necessarily for hiding the detector itself.

There is no point in hiding unless you're trying to run a radar detector in VA or on a military base. They're legal everywhere else in the US.

See, that gets tricky as you don't want to compromise the range of your unit. It claims it only affects laser, but I don't imagine putting a layer of leather in front of my V1 will do it any favors.
Leather is less pervious to a radar signal than the laminated windshield.

I sold the F-350 today to a guy in Manassas. Interesting story, his brother and dad came to look at it four days earlier and we were in the process of negotiating a deal. Brother swooped in (with no prior knowledge of the deal) and offered me more money. It's a small world!

It was a nice truck. Something had to go. Now you have some money to put into your new toy :D

Yeah, it was time for it to go. I'll miss it, though... it was a really good truck. Maybe one of these days I'll get the Excursion 6.0 Eddie Bauer that I've been lusting after. ;)

It's been a while since we have updated this thread, but we've had a few adventures including the trip up to TDIFest, which was incredible. Pics from that trip can be found in the TDIFest 2015 pictures thread.

We have three trips coming up in the next month; two to Michigan, and one to the Ho5G in NH. Total mileage will be about 3,500 miles, plus our recent trip to Michigan a couple of weeks ago, which puts us at around 5,000 miles in a five week period.

The Touareg just got new brakes - thanks to IDParts for supplying the parts that I won at the TDIFest auction.

Mk2 Jetta front pads vs. V10 front pads.

Shouldn't that caption be reversed? Aren't the smaller pads for the Jetta?

If you need a radar detector on a military base, you may or may not want to reconsider your life choices up to that point
You may want to consider the fact that people live off base and don't want to have to take it down every day.

I've never had a problem on military bases over the last 27 years. It may be a local jurisdiction thing for those bases in VA.

I've only been in for 10 years, but radar/laser detection equipment is illegal to use on any DoD installation. Tyndall, Eglin, Hurlburt, Nellis were all strict on it, Macdill is pretty laid back on most traffic rules(especially motorcycle gear). Perhaps your luck was due to being on Army posts as a TACP.

Well, my last station was Ft. Irwin in 1988-90 no problem there, and since then I've been only going to Beale AFB every now and then here in northern California. Now Beale used to have civilians on the gate but the last few times I was there SPs were at the gate. It might be that the civilians did not care. BTW, I built my very first RWR from a kit while I was stationed at K2 Air Base, Taegu, Korea in 1972/72.

What happens at those FL bases if you do have one, just tell you to put it away until you leave the base? I have a BlendMount under my mirror in the Jetta so they would still see the mount and power cord even with out the V1 being there.

Tell you it cannot be in use, so either pull it down or un plug it. Nice to see another oddball AF AFSC on here, Merry Christmas!
