Sell it to someone that is willing to weld it and fix it. There is nothing more environmentally friendly than keep using already made parts.

I think the shop is overcharging you on labour. To R&R the pipe is less than an hour. Gasket and shop materials is less than $50. Most shops are ignorant on purpose. They know EXACTLY what they are doing.

What size pipe did you use? My cat pipe just broke on my Jetta and I'm considering the same repair. Is it 2.5in-->2.25in?
I applied a similar repair to mine this weekend. Hopefully it holds up. The adapter I used was 2.5in --> 2.5in.

Unless a significant amount of pipe goes into the new piece, the connections should also at least be tack welded. But fully welded is always better.
