The lack of space in my basement finally exceeded my lack of time so I'm selling clusters again. See http://bitfab.com/tdi for current inventory.

One recent development is that some clever folks have discovered how to patch many of the MKIV clusters to enable needle-sweep. See http://www.users.on.net/~graeme86/sw.../sweep501.html and http://www.users.on.net/~graeme86/sw.../sweep503.html for details. All future clusters that I sell will, if possible, have needle sweep enabled - unless you don't want it.

If I sold you a cluster in the past, I'll be happy to enable needle-sweep (if possible) for free, but you'll have to pay postage both ways or be in the Boston, MA area.

I hope you don't mind me posting this, but there is now a ColorMFA that could be added to the cluster you're getting gmenounos.

A little background on it on VWVortex and Facebook.

Yes, I know about the ColorMFA, but it takes months to order one and then requires tearing apart the cluster to install. I'm in the process of trying to get one to try out.

If you bought a FIS cluster and are disappointed that the top 2 lines are blank (because you don't have a VW factory double-DIN radio or navigation system or a 3rd party device such as VFIZ or FIS-Control), there is a relatively inexpensive solution if you know which end of a soldering iron to hold:
https://github.com/ibanezgomez/FISBlocks

I've started building one of these and I can confirm that it actually does write text to the top 2 lines of the display. I still need to finish modifying the OBD cable so I can try it out in the car. Anyway, it looks like a very cool project, it's open source and the parts currently cost less than $25!

If you have been having trouble getting a 3LB (3-Line BUS) or CAN device to display text/graphics on your FIS cluster, this may help. The first 2 digits of the cluster soft coding needs to be >= 16 when using 3LB and < 16 when using CAN. Then you need to recode the CAN gateway with the same value that it's already set to. This will cause it to rescan the CAN bus, forgetting devices that no longer exist and learning new ones that it finds. It seems that if a cluster was once used with a CAN radio/Navi (say on a workbench or in a different car), it will refuse to recognize data coming over the 3LB until you recode the CAN gateway and make it realize that the radio is no longer there.
