Our O9A transmission jumps out of 4th or 5th about 3000 rpm. I'm about to pay someone $800.00 to change out the transmission solenoids. Wondering if that cost is high, low or about right. I already dropped off the car and this will be done tomorrow therefore it's a bit late to ask now. However I still wonder. I saw someone posted he did it himself for $300.00. I normally try to do everything myself, but this just didn't occur to me being a transmission.

My wife did take it to another place for a second quote. She said they were amazed about the panzer skid plate, every mechanic there took it for a ride, they checked the fluid level and finally came up with $3000.00.

Its about six hours worth of work for a driveway mechanic prone to errors and do-overs. For a shop that does the work on a regular basis they should be able to do it in half that time. The kit is $300, OE trans fluid $30 a liter (you need three) so... $400 for shop time. It's not outrageous.

I did my own 'cause I can't bear the thought of paying someone to break my car. I can do that myself for nothing. Plus I know exactly what the job entailed so if there's a problem later on I know where to look.

p.s. I'm making the assumption that the shop will change all nine solenoids. Don't waste your money replacing one or two. If your mechanic puts in the time to tear it down to the point where he has access, it's cost effective to replace all of them on the assumption that they are all likely to go squirrely at some point.

Someone here, I think CoolAirVW, has a how-to for changing the solenoids. The pan is vertically mounted and some tube sticks out that creates a challenge for pan removal.

He said the same thing. He changed all nine. I saw all nine. I was wondering about the fluid. Would it be safe to assume the fluid is now changed and I should change it again the next 100,000 miles.
