I did my auto tranny, but I read that the final drive is a separate unit.

Please don't say use the search, because I've got hours in it - didn't see it on vortex either.
I saw one post on checking, it said access is by taking the fitting where the speedo goes in out, and there is a dipstick.
Do you drain it via the side panel? do you then need a new gasket?
what spec oil and how much?
is it good maint. or required or am I going over the top? (I'm familiar with Audi's "filled for life" mantra)

I'm at 145K and figured I'd do that before I put the skidplate on :)

Thanks!

Don't worry about it, does that help?

The fluid simply lubricates the final drive bearings and differential. There is no exchange of air, wear particles, combustion by-products etc.

If you really have to do it...

Easy method:
Suck the fluid out with an oil extractor via the speedo shaft.

Hard (messy) method:
Remove the cover and drain the fluid out. Replace gasket with a new one, top off via the speed shaft.

Thanks DB, if that's all it does...then it' stays :) and I'll get to work on the skidplate.

Appreciate the link stancho. MoGolf actually did the t-belt on this one.
