VCDS Confusion

I have been messing around with my new VCDS cable and have a couple of questions. I cannot find anything about the exhaust system.I went through all of the modules and nothing says anything about the DPF. I believe that a regen occurred and wanted to see if it was recorded in VCDS. Also, there are many "module not responding" error codes, even for components that the car should have. Any idea of what I am doing wrong? I have been through the threads here,as well as on Ross-tech's site, with no luck, thanks...Mark

There are just too many to list....
There is no separate exhaust controller, that is all done through the Engine. If you do a CAN installation list, it'll quickly spit out all the modules on the CAN bus for you.

I did that and there is still nothing about the exhaust system.Should I do it again or do I need to call them? Thanks...Mark

What exactly are you looking for? Measuring Block Groupe 241 should have some DPF information. Are you just wanting the Ash load?

I am mostly trying to learn how to use this cable.I know it did a regen yesterday, cat temps to 1100 degrees, and I thought I would look at the data. So from the module screen I use the measuring block tab and enter 241? Or do I have to use advanced measuring blocks? Yeah and I want to know the ash load, thanks Mark

Well, I went out and played with it more and what I am finding out is that the 2014 Beetle uses different measuring blocs for different things, but,it also doesn't give very much info. I guess that a more experienced person might be able to tell what it is reading by the data presented. For example, it give a temp reading, but doesn't say what is being measured. I checked Ross Tech and it seems that the car is too new for them to have the info. I assume that as time goes by, this will resolve itself. Here are some clips of the recommended numbers:

Your car is so new there is no label file for it. See upper left corner of the pic you posted of vcds.

Thanks, that is kind of what I thought. Is that something that will come with a software upgrade during a scheduled service? I am pretty new to new cars and really don't like the lack of information, but maybe I'm a pioneer :D ...Mark

The new label files will come from Ross-Tech with a newer version of VCDS. It will not come from the dealer. It might be worth an email to: support@ross-tech.com to ask about when the label file for your car will be available. It might already be included in the latest beta test version of VCDS (14.7.2), if you want to give that a try. It can be found here: http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/beta/current.html

Thanks Don, I have been through the Ross-tech site a lot and I get the feeling that they get much of this info from the user feedback. That is as users figure out what is being measured, they report to them, is that correct? Or, does VW eventually release that info in the service manual, when that is released? The 2014 FSM is not out as far as I can see. It is probably a combination of the two...Mark

Part of the solution!!!

Well, I am finally gaining an understanding of how this all works. I followed Ross-tech's instructions and created maps of the controllers that do not have label files (very important). I then sent them to Ross-tech and they use this information to create the said label files. I see now how a question that I may think to be reasonable, can't be easily answered, without laying a lot of foundation. I really appreciate all the help :D ...Mark

Well. I stuck the vcds on the beetle for the first time since this thread. I downloaded the latest beta version from RossTech and they have since come up with a label file for the 2014 Beetle. I sent them a test result that they use to get the most current data, I have to admit that they give great service and are a pleasure to deal with.

I am still having trouble with the data though. The car has just under 6k miles and I am sure that it has done several regens, I have a scangauge for that. The vcds says that there have been 3 requests for regens, but 0 completed. How do I interpret this? The real good thing is that it also shows 0% soot build up. I am not worried about any of this, I am just trying to understand the beast, something that I could never do with the ex ...Mark
