Have a 2001 Golf TDI. Started up fine this afternoon, but then after a few minutes of driving started to cut out and surge. First once, then another time another minute later, then I lost all power and we started to coast down. The car immediately killed when I put the clutch in. Now when I try to restart it turns over strong with a few little kicks and burbles but won't idle.

The battery is in good shape. No air bubbles in the fuel line. Check engine light and glow plug light come on fine (this means is not relay 109 right?).

First time the car has truly failed us! Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Looks like it was the relay 109 after all. It must have been an intermittent fault. I jumpered the relay... ran fine. Then I took the relay apart and resoldered all the joints... installed it and all seems fine now. I'll grab a new one, and a spare for the glovebox, tomorrow.
Glad it ended up being something simple. Thanks for the advice TDICADDGUY, the timing belt was pretty much my nightmare thought as soon as the car died :)
