Default Warranty/$ Question

I found a used 2000 Golf TDI GLS 5 spd, 52,000 miles, lux, monsoon, and 16" rims (needs new tires). It seems a little rough, and already ate one MAF. I finally have a matching 2002 at the stealer waiting for me.

1. The stealer tells me that as the second owner, my warranty would already be expired on the 2000. Is this true?

2. The used car doesn't seem to pull until it hits 2200 rpm. Then it wants to wind out to 3500 rpm. I would be concerned driving in that range in a TDI. Is this normal after so many miles, or could it be from the way the car was 'broken' in?

3. Both options seem priced high. $19,300 new, $14,900 used. Any thoughts? (Seller, if you're reading this, I would be happy to hear from you too. ) Decisions, decisions...

Without knowing the service record and past history of the vehicle (what type of oil & change intervals, intake cleaned?...). Hopefully it has received regular servicing with a good CH-4 Diesel synthetic oil (Amsoil, Delvac 1...) The used car will need a timing belt replacement in 8,000 miles (tack on $400-$600 for this procedure), may need brakes also. I would try to swing for a new TDI or used with documented service & repair records.

if you can afford it, new is always new. you can break it in the way you want and you will always know the full history of the vehicle. good luck.

Hey all,

While we're on the subject, can anyone explain why the Golf TDIs are priced below Jettas to begin with, but seem to hold their value better?

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try to get the $ for the new one.

One reason I think they hold their value is because they seem to be rare in comparison to the Jetta. The opposite probably holds true in Europe.

hey dennis are you interested in a get together in the phoenix area in the future? there's a couple of fellows up there with a posting on the "G/T/G" forum. maybe we can give them a little "southern comfort" from the old pueblo!

Applehead - I am interested, but until I actually have one I'm the wrong one to get involved. I am still torqued at VW and their Tucson stealership because of their delays and apparent deception on my car order. I see other TDIs around, and I will try to get in touch for the GTG idea. Thanks for the HU.
