Thanks to everyone who has put their input in on the 6 speed swap, I (and I'm sure a lot of others) have learned a great deal from all of you.
I just bought an 02 jetta TDI with 222k miles on it (got a good deal) and recently learned that it has the dreaded 01m transmission and the P0740 code is on (now I know why I got a good deal). Overall it still shifts fairly well, no surging, and it hunts maybe a little between 3rd and 4th.
My thoughts of pouring money into a very well used transmission seems not the best option and I would be better off redirecting my money toward a different option. So, I am now considering doing a 5 or 6 speed swap and have a few questions:
(Let me preface my questions with the fact that I'm new to the forums and TDI's in general)
1. Were the 6 speed transmissions (which I believe are coded 02m) for the mk4's available in the US? Or were they only an option in the Euro TDI's?
2. Would a transmission from a mk5 (2006) work in my mk4 with/without major modifications?
2a. If so, would the engine type matter for installation, I5 or TDI?
3. I am a little confused about the transmission type codes, their applications, and model years that they were available. Is there a thread or something in the FAQ? (I couldn't find anything, but that doesn't mean its not out there.) For example, I believe I figured out (please correct me if I am wrong) that 01m is the 4 speed auto trans available in the mk4 series cars. A listing of these codes, or the most common ones would be extrememly helpful for me to determine what transmissions are compatible with my car to do a swap.
Thanks again in advance for the input.
