However, if the car lasts 5 years after installing the transmission, that's equivalent to a $67/mo payment.

A $2k transmission, that I wouldn't trust past those 2 years, costs $83/mo.

Even with all the other maintenance these cars need, both are less than the payment on a 5 year loan on a new TDI (but the VW trans comes out cheaper) - and that new TDI will need plenty maintenance, too.

Don't look at the market value of the car, look at the cost of ownership versus a new one.

A car without a transmission is only worth the value of its other parts.
A 2002 Jetta TDI with a transmission is still worth quite a bit, even during this seasonally weak period for TDI prices.

Actually, AFAICT, a car without a transmission is worth the value of its other parts, minus the costs associated with parting it out.

I will allow this post to stay, provided you guys begin the vendor registration process. You won't be added to the list until you receive recommendations from others on the forum. If your numbers are correct, that shouldn't take too long.

And you would trust the VW trans that much more? I've had 2 that failed within 2 years.. Go ahead and try to get your local dealer to warranty one after 18 months/55k...

One lasted 6 weeks and the seal behind the torque converter blew out.. I had to fight them tooth and nail to warranty that one, and they do not pay for labor unless they installed it themselves..

The cheapest way out is to put a used unit in, sell the car, and get a 35mpg gasser beater for $2-3k and be done with it.. I don't know about your neck of the woods, but there's a $0.90 gap between regular gas and diesel.. TDI's (especially automatics) aren't the cheapest cars to own/operate anymore...

True, if you're going to flip the car, then the cheapest transmission that gets the car moving (even sawdust down the dipstick, if you have no morals and that gets the car moving) is the way to go.

In this sort of economy, not everyone has $4000 laying around to get their car up and running again.. $1200 is a LOT easier to come up with...

I give everyone no less than four options for getting it back on the road again.. 1-VW unit, 2-Reman from outside company, 3-used unit, 4-manual trans swap..

Found great mechanic thanks to TDIClub

This is my first post...just wanted to say thanks for all the great info on this site for TDI owners.

A couple of months back I had a rough running issue on a long trip after hitting a pothole and the day after the engine wouldn't start...towed it to the dealer where they were not willing to do the proper diagnostics but were absolutely convinced that it needed a new injection pump!

I refused to let them work on the car and couldn't convince them to follow any sort of reasonable diagnostic procedure so I was preparing to try to diagnose the issue myself when I found a recommendation on this site for DCB Automotive in Toronto.

I got my car towed from the dealership to DCB and within 10 minutes Brandon had the car running again...he has the factory diagnostic tools and quickly determined that the pump was good and that the problem was due to a flaky 109 relay...he recommends that all his customers carry a spare one since it is apparently not uncommon for them to fail. Brandon charged me fairly for his time and I haven't had any issues since.

Since then I've joined the forum and was surprised to find out that DCB is not listed in the Trusted TDI Mechanics list (unless I'm looking in the wrong place) so here's the contact info for anyone in Ontario/GTA looking for a trustworthy TDI specialist who knows his stuff.

Sorry for the novel...Thanks again and hopefully this info can help someone else out.

I guess I'd be surprised as well... Over in the Ontario forum Brandon's usually the first one recommended... Last time I went there, my car was quickly followed by two from Ottawa...

If he's not listed in the "official" Trusted Mechanics' list, he should be !!!

Any TDI folks in Vermont?

Would like to get connected and share local experiences!

I see no mechanics listed for Vermont, can we remedy this?

Promise to update this thread with experiences...

Cheers,

Just got my car back from Rich Alberghini in Barnegat, nj. Another fantastic job on my timing belt by him and one less leaky water pump. Definitely a guy to go to if your in south jersey or the shore.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an independent in Western Suffolk County, NY?
TDIJetta99 is right -- there are no recommended TDI mechanics on Long Island or in NYC. So if you have a TDI-specific issue, or just have questions that require an expert, you'll need to make a short road trip. Not that bad, really -- there is a club member in Zimbabwe who has to take his TDI to South Africa for expert service, and members up by Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory who are 600+miles from the nearest TDI shop.

For non-TDI issues, try to find a well-established local shop that specializes in Volkswagens or German cars in general. You don't need a TDI guy for work on brakes or electrics or suspension stuff.

stafford va allen bristow aka gp1963

Hi all just wanted to let you guys know about a guy in stafford va who forum name here is 1963gp. His name is Allen bristow and lives near Tom. He does great work and has avast collection of VW buses and and fair share of newer tdi. Long story short I had a noise in my engine that sounded like a top end valve train noise. Sounded like a lifter tapping so I replaced the lifters and cam. Noise was still there, and I had checked all other avenues like injector noise, pump, tensioners, valve guides, so i decided to short out each cylinder by cracking each injector line...noise got quiter with number 2 even though there was no bottom end noise that i could hear. So I decided to slap a used engine. Allen had one and I decided to use the one he had. Before I decided to put that engine in, I wanted to put a new hg on and we found that the piston on number one was missing a chunk out of it. Well that threw out that idea. We figured it was still in the top end, but I was unsure so I took off the oil pan of my engine and started inspecting for any play anywhere. One thing I did check was when the number 2 piston was bottom dead center I took a prybar and lightly checked if there was any play in side to side clearance. Guess what, there was play and the noise it sounded like upper end metallic tapping noise. I also looked up and could see the bottom of the piston skirt where the black coating was rubbed off. So we decided to pop my head off and take that rod and piston out. Man it was trashed by what looked like either wash down from a bad injector or it got starved of oil from the previous owner busting the oil pan and starved it for oil. Well the dilema was I had to get the car back together for work monday, so we had to figure out something. Plus the cylinder walls had aluminum from the piston rubbing on it. Well he had extra pistons lying around and we took the best piston to what we had and swapped the piston onto my original wrist pin and rod and bearings as they all looked to be fine. We didnt have a hone so I took 220 grit sandpaper and roughed off the cylinder walls to a smooth finsh following up with finer grit while creating a cross hatch as best as possible. We put the new (200k miles) piston in and put everything back together with new hg and bolts, seals etc..we also took the trans out and insalled a new clutch while it was there since we never actually removed the block and did all this with the engine still in. I even reused the rod bolts which i know you arent suppose to do and made sure the bolt wasnt stretched out but I needed to get the car running. So after all this, we both had our doubts but we fired up the car and to our suprise, it was quiet and no smoke. We set up the timing and iq and made sure the engine warmed up proper, drove it home 1.5 hours with no issues. Its now been a month and over 2000 miles and its still quiet and no blue smoke.

All I can say is Allen is super nice for letting me use his garage shop and he knows his stuff. He can do just about anything with the tdi's from control arm bushings, auto to manual swaps, clutches, timing belts, suspension work, regular maintenance, performance upgrades like exhaust and intake installs and installing upgraded turbo to head gaskets and complete engine swaps. He can weld as well. His shop is nice and he is very hospitable and will help out anyway he can. His prices are very reasonable and are usually lower than most. Give him a shout and see what he can do for you if you need any repairs to your tdi. He also has a nasty gp that runs 10's all motor.
I am a master Volvo tech and I was suprised myself about the outcome as was he, but we both worked as a team and got the job done in a weekend including the clutch and engine dissasembly. We wasted more time trying figure out what we were going to do get me back on the road and which game plan to take but once we made the decision, we got it done pretty fast. If you have any questions, give him a shout. He also has a pretty fun golf with 17/22 and rc4+

So if you need any work at a reasonable price from a super honest, knowledgeable, and nice guy, get in touch with Allen.

Greg

I have dealt with him for the last 8 years. He has dones extensive maintenance and repair work on my 99.5 Jetta TDI (ie. timing belt, suspension, electrical, clutch, bearings, brakes,..) He's been in business for 48 years in same location, started with air cooled bugs and occassional Porches, to current models of VW's and Audis. Around here, he's well known alternative (wise choice) over VW/Audi Dealer. BTW, I have an Audi and a MB and he has been great on those as well. As a plus, he's honest and rates are reasonable. I can tell you some stories, but that will be too long for this. PM me or email me if any one wishes to query further on this.

Lastly, I'm not sure if I posted this properly, or is there another way to get him on the list? Moderator, please excuse my ignorance, I've been visiting the forum for years, but had hardly posted. Sorry.

RGM: it will take more testimonials to get RomGog on the official list, but anyone from WV who is looking for a mechanic can find your post and then decide for himself if this shop is as good as you say.

Based on what you've said, it sounds like this is a good shop for German cars, maybe both gas and diesel, but not necessarily TDI experts.

Kudos to Guru Jason in Madison!

Jason took a shell of an '02 Jetta wagon and masterfully replaced the entire engine (140k used), leaving me with a smooth driving, no issue 220K vehicle. Very nice job Jason and thanks a million. :)

Big thanks to k_harley

I took my 2005 MkIV Jetta TDI to k_harley at KMH motors in Lowell MA this morning, and I couldn't be happier.

Keith said that my BEW motor was one that he's less familiar with, but I sure couldn't tell! He collected the right tool for each task before looking at the fasteners involved, and told me exactly what he expected to find in the intake, under the valve cover, inside the turbo housing...

And he was spot on each time.

I'm thrilled to have found a TDI expert I can trust, and I recommend Keith / KMH motors without reservation.

Thanks, Keith!

New shop on our radar:

Gottier Small Engine, Tolland CT - (860) 875-2802

I've spoken with the owner, Doug, many times. He is new to the TDI scene but he really know how to properly diagnose TDI - he has the right tools, has VAG-COM etc. There are couple TDIs in his family that he learned on - bought the cars with blown heads or timing belts and rebuilt them for his family's use.

Hopefully a few TDI owners can make it over there and get some more feedback!

Close to 50 years in business. Started in aircooled but now are Kansas Cities best VW specialists. Andy Lee (head VW mech) is a great guy and a fantastic mechanic. Most at "VV" are local enthusiasts and many are "diesel geeks". I do most of my own work but I use them a lot for diagnostics and if the job is too much, I will use them and only them.

I know just about every VW enthusiast in the greater KC area and ALL would recommend Vee Village. Competitors and disgruntled ex-employees are the only ones to have a bad word.

Erm, I'm having trouble finding mechanics in California, seems the trusted TDI mechanic list is a bit out of date for my area... do you know where in Cali the great mechanic ended up? Or if he's still working on TDIs? Or his contact info? Thanks!

When I attended one of the TDI dinners about 5 years ago I specifically asked about VeeVillage and as I recall no-one recommended them for TDI work. Perhaps they are good on the old air-cooled engines and maybe Porsches, but I don't have either one of them..

After reading the above post, I asked one of the local TDI mechanics and he won't deal with them anymore. (I don't really consider him a 'competitor' as he specializes in TDIs and they do not.)

Sorry, not trying to start a fight, just pointing out that opinions and experiences do differ in this case.

Bill
