shutter valve and egr

i saw at the tdifest this week end some cars that didn't had the shutter valve and the egr on top where is the air intake or the manifold !

it was only a strait pipe with a welded flange attached to the rest ???

what does it do ? is it only less probleme or it does a performace upgrade or a fuel economie ???

all this on A4

I like the racepipe concept but I don't want to give up the anti-studder emergency engine cut off feature.

I can't even find the ding-dang post where I showed my homemade stealth EGR with the "Fabtabulous Search Function" here...
