I'm re-mounting my 05 NB transmission after a clutch swap, and I need to bolt the mounting bracket/console/side mount to the trans case. This is done with 3 M10x80 bolts with 16mm hex heads numbered 1-3 below:

I looked several times in my New Beetle Bentley and couldn't find torque values for these, or instructions whether to replace every time or not. Then I looked online, and I found two answers: 37 lb-ft +90º and 30 lb-ft +90º. The latter value comes from runonbeer, whose opinion I respect. I'm guessing 37 is the spec, but he felt that was a bit too tight?

If I've missed the torque value in Bentley, please give me a hint how to find it. Also, if you've done this before, please give me your recommendation. If any of you have followed runonbeer's torque advice and put a lot of miles on your car afterwards, did you have any issues?

Second question: There are two part numbers for the bolts, one with blue threadlocker pre-applied and one without. Long story, but I have both on hand. Which should I use?

  • N10406204 10x80 hex head bolt with shoulder, self-locking
  • N10406203 10x80 hex head bolt with shoulder (not self-locking)

Here's a thought: Maybe 37 lb-ft +90º is for N10406204 because the thread locker provides extra resistance, and 30 lb-ft +90º is for N10406203 (without the thread locker)?

Thanks for your help and insight!

Update: Although I still can't find the torque spec in my New Beetle Bentley manual, I checked my Jetta Bentley and found the spec on the bottom of page 34-60 listed under "All Vehicles". There it specifies 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) +90º. So I'll go with that torque.

I need to pick up some parts this afternoon from my dealer. I'll ask them about the choice of bolts and report back here.

Update #2: The dealer said that the self-locking N10406204 bolts are the current spec.

So that answers both questions: Specified torque is 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) +90º, and I should use the self-locking bolts.

However, I'm also aware that runonbeer feels like 30 lb-ft +90º is better. I'll see how the bolts feel and decide when tightening them.

I would think (ut-oh) the blue thread locker will keep them in with either torque.
