T5 0w-40 is a synthetic BLEND, not full synthetic like T6 per Shell's website and from info I recall from reading the bottle(s).

Assuming this info is correct: http://widman.biz/English/Tables/J300.html

T6 exceeds the 5w minimum rating of 6600 @ -30C by a fair margin.

The great unknown with all this is what happens at temps warmer than this, but colder than 40C. This can be extrapolated to a certain point based on VII, 40C and 100C viscos.

TDT's VI of 153 vs T6's of 170 is significant.

Bob the castrol edge 505.01 is specced at Viscosity, CCS -30C ASTM D5293 mPa.s (cP) 5550, how close is that to 0w?

While it has the SB moniker, Rotella T SB 0w40 is 100% synthetic. Why Shell did that... who knows.

"Rotella T SB 100% Synthetic 0W-40"

http://www-static.shell.com/static/c...cants/1-15.pdf

In the ALH I would run Mobil 1 0w40, Rotella T SB 0w40 or D1 ESP 0w40 without worries. (or any of other Euro 0w40s)

Also, what does the higher flash point on the T6 mean?
CE 505.01 FP 210c, VS T6 FP 224c

Unknown exactly since 0w and 5w are measured at different temps.

I can't give you a good explanation (I don't know exactly), but this might help.

Been there from the beginning Bob . The trick is to find it in single quarts, since they refuse to sell a 5 quart bottle. Walmart and Meijer don't seem to carry the single quart and when they do it is close to seven bucks.

Fancy there dog

Have you tried FLAPS, truck stops or 'farm-type' (rural king, fleet farm, farm and fleet etc) stores?

I have seen single quarts of T6 in one Wal-Mart here (Mountain View), but another only had 4L jugs (Milpitas). The cons of owning a diesel I guess. Oh and neither one carries a battery for my A3
