Hello,
I was driving today and noticed a high pitch sound coming from the rear of the engine. The sound is proportional to engine speed. It does not build up boost at all. Any ideas on what this could be?
The car is a 2010 jetta tdi cup edition. It has had some exhaust work done.
Thanks,
Al

All turned back to VW. Now a 2017 Hundai Tuscon. Not a single squalk in 10k miles.
You, sir, have an exhaust leak. Someone messed up.

Or a boost leak or perhaps a vacuum leak.

You can check for a boost leak by applying the brake and putting the car in 1rst, reving to about 1500 RPM's and gently letting out the clutch to load the engine and bring it up on boost. A boost leak will usually sound like a hissing sound.

Don't do it for more than a few seconds at a time or you might fry the clutch.

Yea so I was driving home from Thanksgiving dinner with the family when the noise stopped. Then a noticed a cloud of smoke behind me. I am pretty sure the turbo is toast.

Your turbo is probably fine. As Ol'Rattler suggests you may have a boost leak. My guess is your intercooler hose has popped off.

Yea I think the seal on the exhaust side of the turbo is shot. Smoke everywhere and the oil level declines when being driven. Got it to a shop. Going to see what they say.
