I was driving 4 hours today
Had cruise set at 70-72mph

3 hours into the drive and the light came on.

Any clues?

I do have a car scanner, anything I should be looking for?

If you'll open your manual, you'll see that it means that you need to go on a drive (see the manual for specific criteria). If it is flashing, your MFD will indicate that there is an emissions problem, and you'll probably have to have the dealer do a manual regen. If it's really bad off, you'll have to replace it.

Need to go on a drive? The OP states he's been driving for 3 hours or so...

yeah that doesn't sound good for the OP.

How many miles on the car?

What was the oil used on the last change/changes?

What've you been using for fuel?

Hopefully you still have warranty and it's just a EGT sensor or something.

No kidding.. it came on during the drive.

My check engine light with glow plug flashing has been coming on lately.
Maybe with this on the DPF will not run the cycle?

Change oil every 10k
By the oil change kit from TDIparts online

The car is now at the dealer...

Specifically which oil and which TDIParts website?

If you are not using 507.00 rated oil, the ash in the oil could have plugged your DPF.

And hopefully you are referring to IDParts.com and not that other prothe site.

i think the procedure described in the manual is to drive 5 minutes @ >3000rpm

My owners manual ('09 JSW, page 250) recommends 2000 rpms for 15 minutes. However, since the OP was driving on a long highway trip when this light came on - I do not believe this will help. I suspect his problem is a failed sensor or a seriously clogged DPF caused by some other failure. It may be time to see the dealer, especially if the car is still under warranty (and the emissions system has a longer warranty than the rest of the car). Good Luck!

Have Fun!

That's a big red flag right there. I would have read the codes immediately on a 'flashing' CEL or at least taken it to the dealer. BTW, you say you have a "car scanner", generic OBD-II readers are pretty useless on our cars, really need to use the Ross-Tech VCDS or have the codes read at a dealership.

Good luck. Keep us posted on what the dealer has to say..

well good luck at the dealers and let us know what's the root problem, if they can find one.

my stab in the dark, the exhaust flapper valve!

They already changed the exhaust flapper valve under warranty.
I have a Ross-Tech VCDS scanner. I did the scan.
The car has 74k, nothing is under warranty now.

Dealer says it needs a new turbo. $3,500

That sucks.

Can you tell us about your driving habits? I purposely drive mine hard through at least a few gears (to 4,000 rpm) virtually every trip...trying to keep the turbo healthy.
