Can anyone tell me how to tell if the upper strut mounting rubbers and/or bearings require replacement. MkIII Golf.

The rubber will gradually compress. The plate at the strut top will be further and further above the inner fender. A new rubber will permit about 1/2 inch or 10 to 15 mm gap between the fender and the bottom of the plate. If you are approaching 1 inch, 25 mm replace them.

Let me put it this way. If you are planning to replace the front suspension, why not just do the mounts and bearings. You have to take the whole thing out anyhow. If you choose not to do them, you may have to rip out the whole suspension to replace these parts, then re-install everything. Not worth it, as you have to get an alignment done after working on the front suspension, etc. They ARE wear parts, and will eventually need to be replaced. If you decide to change them, you can go with ones for the VR6 Jetta/Vento, as they are a little stiffer. Just a thought.
