Thanks for info all

Almost the entire car has been repainted or replaced by then. :)

Do you mean paid for BY VW?!? If so, that's great.

I'll see the body shop rep (works at Myers VW, but not for them ) in 3 weeks. She'll do the photos and send claim to VW Cda. She seems really positive and optimistic based on the my general description/ shape of my car...she asked me if this is my first visit for rust. Gees. VW does better than most companies do with rust protection I think, but will we ever get away from it? I guess if you want to drive a plastic Saturn...

There's only 112k on my TDI! I need the body to hold up!

It's too bad VW hasn't figured out body corrosion yet.
Have you seen 5 year old Mazdas running around with rust? Lots around. My 14 year old car just started rusting around the front fender. Too late to get fixed by VW, but I can't imagine too many cars that last 14 years in Canadian winters like my car did. I can't complain.

Mazdas seem to rust as soon as they see snow, lol!

BTW, your exhaust is off and ready to go.

Update on my bubbling rusty fenders

Hello all,

I am thrilled to report that within a week of seeing my 06 Jetta TDI on 22 Dec, VW Canada has made the decision to replace BOTH of my front fenders! I am outside of the service bulletin limits, but my problem is still the same design flaw.
Interestingly, when the insurance gal measured my paint to ensure I hadn't repainted, it measured .08 (vs the .06 she usually sees. I hope this means I had a superior paint job in plant!)

Thumbs up for fixing your mistake VW.

How can your '06 be out of warranty? What service bulletin are your refering to? Why was the insurance company involved in this and who's insurance company was it?

you are lucky. my 2005PD wagon. had some rust, and still has. the VW refused to fix the rust on the tailgate just below the rear window. also they refused to cover the rear door lining bar(or whatever itis called). but had no problem with the roof. i didn't even know i had issue wihthe roof( near roofrack holders). I would say, i'm 50% satisfied.

What was the given reason for the refusal?

external factors, such as rocks or scratches.also, for the door middle liner, it doesn't make sense at all. i told them that the rust as it appears to be just at the edge of the door (looking from the driver side), under the door lining, will spread more and more. how it could be external factor?
Paint was paling off under the hood. they refused based on external factors. i do have some spots on the hood external, for that i didn't argue. but come on, rocks flying under the hood?
However i do have to give them a credit on earlier warranty. they replaced both fenders, due to paint fading and chirping away. apparently itis a major issues with 2005 passats.

What is a door middle liner? Post pictures of everything you are trying to describe.

I've got a '13 GSW and I'm having some issues with front passenger door having a tough time opening and closing. Under extended warrany (VW protection plus or whatever they want to call it) and the dealer and warranty company are giving me a tough time saying they only cover mechanical and they are saying the door hinge is not considered mechanical.

Would this be better dealt with by contact VW HQ directly? It is very frustrating and disappointing that this can happen on a 3yo car.

Dealership also won't change the driver side wiper arm...the joint portion is rusty and does not give enough tension so wipe the window clean...their solution was for me to keep a can of WD-40 and lube as necessary.

Contact HQ and see what they say. Is the warranty from VW or some third party that the dealer sold you?
In either case, you need to find what you've signed and read the fine print, all of it.

Anything wiper related is really hard to get covered. VW has some pretty stingy stipulations. How old are the wipers? Have you cleaned the windshield yet? Degreased it?

Just filled out the online corrosion inspection form at Peterborough VW this morning for my '06 TDI Wagon. I've been meaning to do it for the last year.

They called me within hours to let me know my 12 year warranty expires this Friday! They're getting me in for photos tomorrow thank goodness.

Both front fender arches are rusted as well as rear hatch below the window. Looks bad but no perforation, possibly perforation around the hatch. Keep you posted on how it goes, would be nice to get at least the hatch replaced.

Cheers

Just curious, does AUDI have a similar rust policy? Though I think in my daughters case she'd probably be S.O.L with her trunk lid. I think instead of immediately applying touch up paint she just let it go and now it is a very porous rust spot about 10cm square. She won't take it to a car wash so I guess water gets into the trunk now.

Audi's rust policy is a joke. I took our A4 Avant in a few years ago. Great car but man it was rusty. It needed 4 doors, hatch and both fenders. Audi claimed the rust was too far advanced caused by negligence. Also, the adjuster pointed out that Audi only covered 50% of the cost. I was quoted $7k for the necessary work. I dumped the car shortly thereafter.

Touch up paint will void the warranty. A buddy had no issue having half his A6 painted under warranty. Read the owner's manual or call the dealer about how similar the Audi warranty is to VW.

I went in and Anne, their warranty specialist, was super friendly and helpful.
In early January she contacted me to let me know VW Canada had approved repairs to both front fenders, and the trunk. There were some areas not covered but I'm happy to have those repaired/replaced at least (I need to see what they will actually be doing). VW Peterborough will not be performing the work but it will be done by a local body shop. Hopefully it goes well.
Hope the new year is treating everyone well.

Folks, I am going to make a suggestion here. I have a couple of 2006. After having body work done, start oil coating. If you have any paint bubbling use clear food grade silicon grease( expensive) and cover the edges where it started and the surface area it has spread to. I bought mine at Culligan and no the cost was not that bad compared to internet.

Get ready to replace missing rubbers( buy at dealer) in the rocker panels. Any loose rock guard cut it back and cover area with urethane caulking. I used the stuff sold by home depot, ask for only that. It will support any weak rusted areas and resists oil and is better than rubberized rock guard. You can spray rock guard over it. The urethane sticks excellent if it is as clean as possible( soap, brushes, paint thinner and acetone)

Yes all the fender well stuff too. Mechanically they are in good shape but It's the only way I see to get another 5 years minimum before the crusher.
