and trying to catch up on what I missed. For whatever reason,
I wasn't interested in anything TDI for months, but now that
I have the abs controller fixed (for free), I can breathe a
sigh of relief, and use a bit of moneys saved towards what I
thought was going to end up as a new abs pump instead for
injectors.

I have an upsoluted in '02, 01 Jetta TDI auto, stock injectors.
What is the current wisdom on these boards? .205 nozzles?
I've looked through some recent threads over the last few weeks
and am not finding a simple answer that gives me more power
and keeps the smoke down.

I did read about keeping the snow screen clean (mine is long
gone) and other intake issues, plus maf issues. So far, my
maf appears to be functioning within normal parameters.
I have via vag-com adjusted my (something something) to help
cut down on the garbage in the intake, but Kennedy tells me
that that wasn't the panacea everyone thought it would be.

(I may be misquoting him, and if that's the case, get used
to it Kennedy! I work with you, I get to harrass you, that's
the rules).

Costs must be kept down, down and down, and since this is
my daily driver, I'd like to keep the risk factor somewhat
removed from the razor's edge.

Thanks folks,

Jud.

If you want to keep costs down, down, down then you are done modding your car.

If you want to spend $$$ to do it right, the next logical step is injectors. You can run the manual .184s with no issues and more power. You can usually pick up a set on the classifieds here for $100-150. Swap 'em, and go. Plug and play.

You can also use .205s or PP520s easily. You will have smoke, and I would suggest upgrading to the RocketChip or Upsolute 2 chip to control smoke and make maximum use of your increased fueling.

Just remember. The more you do, the more it will cost you.

Edit: Stan has these on EBay now. Good price, and an absolutely reliable seller.

Thanks.

I looked at the link. I'd much rather have a flow-tested setup
and do the swap plus the chip change with people around to help
with vag-com adjustments/hammer mod or whatever to help tune
out the smoke and otherwise make sure it's right. I will
likely have to wait for the next get-together in the area.

I agree, much easier to do mods when you have experienced folks around.

One thing though. You will not get flow tested (balanced I assume you mean) injectors unless you send them to someone. With the injectors I posted, you could send to Greg Landuyt for balancing, and have them ready for install at the next local GTG.

You sure those are .205s? He doesn't mention what size they are.
I thought manual tranny ones were only .184s. I'm thinking
.205s minimum - at least, I think I should be able to get away
with those and minimal smoke assuming the right chip and timing.

Nope, those are .184s. They are a +1 nozzle size upgrade for the auto TDIs. However, with the 11mm pump you have (higher pressure = more fueling), they are supposed to be a nice upgrade for the auto TDI. Manual tranny cars have a 10 mm pump. I just traded a set of .184s to a fellow with an auto Jetta, and he couldn't be more pleased with his newfound power. Any smoke can be controlled with a simple IQ adjustment through VAG-COM.

If you want .205s (+2 nozzle upgrade), you will have to buy new nozzles and get them installed.

If you use the .205s, go with a chip designed for larger nozzles. Upsolute 2 or Rocketchip 2 or 3. If you use a chip program for stock injectors, you will get some smoke.

My recommendations were based on your statement of not wanting to spend a lot of $$$.

Have fun with your upgrade.

Ah. Well, I just need to figure out costs. Nozzles are what, $200?
Chip is what??? I'm trying to nail those down. I have about $400
to spend.
