Golf Rear Hatch won't latch

I have a weird issue...

There are times when my hatch won't latch when I close it. It's almost like there's something wedged between the seal and hatch and when I slam it shut, it pops back open and won't latch. If I let the car sit for a day without trying to open/close it, it will close fine. Any thoughts?

I'd say use some good penetrating lube and spray down the entire latch mechanism. Sometimes they can get jammed up. I'd try this first, and if it doesn't work, I'd look a little more closely. Spray and pray, right?
